So out of 300 million people, police killed 111... and if the statistics stayed similar out of 1 million personnel, about 147 were killed on duty. As far as ratios go that doesn't seem horrible. There were ~450 times as many officers killed, as people killed by officers.

Does anyone have stats on deaths of officers in the UK?

God, I was about to make a comment about the kill/death ratio and how the police need to step up their game.

Maybe a sign I should lay off the video games for a little while.

terrorists vs counterterrorists has sadly become accurate

NAYRT

Very very few. You're talking single-figures over the course of a decade. Three between 2000-2011, although an incident a couple of years ago saw two officers killed in the same incident. That was such a big deal over here the memorial service had national television coverage.

In 2010-11, there were 12,550 operations where the use of firearms/presence of an AFO (authorised firearms officer) was authorised. Of that 12,550 the firearm was discharged in 0.04% of incidents. So what, five incidents where the police used their guns?

As a guide, gun related homicide makes up about 2-3% of all UK homicide deaths (38 incidents in 2011). The chances of officers running into someone carrying a gun here are very small.

So what I take out of this is that ill_omened is making a comparison of incomparable situations, and whatever point they are trying to make is moot?

Basically.

Like others have said, the proliferation of guns in US society is incomparable to the use of guns here. Added to that the fact that 96% of our police force aren't even armed, it's not something you can compare. We don't know what our officers would do if every single one of them was legally armed because it simply isn't the case. Shooting suspects isn't an option for the vast, vast majority of police-related incidents here.

There is no like for like comparison here.

There's no way those stats are accurate.

In 1999 just the Met deployed ARVs to 15,000 non preplanned operations. And in the last fifteen years you've only seen an increase in the present.

Take it up with the Government if you think they're inaccurate.

Your numbers need a little checking. The 147 was the number killed in a year, but the 111 number was in a single month. So you first have to see how many police are killed in a month: it's about 12.25. So it means that roughly .001% of total personnel were killed on duty, though the percentage of officers killed is likely higher, since total personnel includes dispatchers, etc., not just active duty officers. So it's more like 30x more officers killed as people killed by officers.

SA

I just saw the numbers above on active duty officers. So that means in a month, about .002% are killed, instead (.001601 to be closer), so about 44x the number of civilians killed by police. Of course, that doesn't really make an argument for whether this *should* be the case, but I thought it would help to have the numbers to work with.

69 shot since 1900 (many of them in pre WW2) - deaths on duty were more but they included things like collapsing during pursuits and in one case "catching a fatal disease from being spat on whilst on duty at a football match - 1977" Bad luck there mate.

NI not included as skews figures.
