I'd like to second Marathon, but each game in the trilogy affected me in some way. Leela's death in the first one hit me especially hard.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-03 03:26 pm (UTC)(link)The level where you have to destroy Durandal's core to keep him from falling into the hands of the Pfhor. I remember freezing before I fired the shotgun into the last of four core sections, because suddenly I didn't want to. I hated Durandal, hated his smug, evil manipulations, his sneering superiority, the way he jerked me around this planet like an errand boy. But he was also, literally, the closest thing I had to a friend in this game. And then I pulled the trigger and felt a weird combination of elation at finally getting to destroy him, and guilt over having to destroy him, and fear of the fact that without him, I was now completely alone on a planet that wanted to kill me.
