Why is Japan so buttpained about these guys.

They're in so many manga and anime it's unbeleiveable.

Prophecy has them as the central antagonist in volume two. Named and everything. Loads of things like Cowboy Bebop have them with the serial numbers filed off. I can't provide a perfect breakdown of examples but I know I've seen them a number of times.

It's not surprising since Japan actively engages in whaling... and doesn't much like peaceful protestors from the West showing up, much less people coming in and disrupting their business.

Not to say all anime is pro-whaling of course, and I've seen far more recurrent shoe-horned in social commentary than that.

SS basically makes itself a giant nuisance around trawling, shark finning, sealing and mostly whaling ships - most of which are from Japan.

Some of their methods are rather dangerous both to themselves and to the ships. Sometimes the whaling ships respond. People on either side have been hurt.

By dangerous methods I mean they've blown holes in the ship hulls, throw acid on board the ships, injured the whalers, ram the boats, destroy their property etc etc.

They're the aggressive PETA of the sea.

(I'm anti-whaling too but SS is not a peaceful protestor and I can see why Japan would be upset over people being injured)

Japan's not upset over the risk to its people, they're upset because they keep getting caught out breaking international law because they are selfish assholes who think that they should be allowed to hunt species into extinction. I have all sorts of issues with GP, but let's not absolve the Japanese of any blame here.

Oh that too, but I was trying to mean the general populace of Japan and how that could leak into anime/manga - kind of like how us Aussies get all upset when a person on SS gets harmed - sometimes due to the whaling ship but sometimes their own sheer stupidity.

I imagine the general population in Japan, same as here, doesn't know the major details and would just hear about that ship causing injuries.
