I really hate most autism spectrum positivity. It's either disgusting inspirational stuff or society should accept you terrifying adult temper tantrums and all. If there was a cure, you can bet my ass I'd be the first one in line.

I also think people who disgusted at parents who don't want to have autistic kids don't realize how much of a strain it is on their parents.

Thank you.

I really hate the idea of an autistic/allistic split, which is really missing the entire point of the spectrum theory.

If there were a big hard split, aspies would be on the "allistic" side of it anyway, as much as certain people want to climb on the "neurodivergent" bandwagon.

I also get kind of annoyed by people on tumblr who post things like "don't ever call autisitc people high functioning or low functioning because we're all worth the same and those terms create a barrier." Like, I think maybe there's a nicer word for it maybe and that of course someone who is lower functioning isn't worth less than someone else, but I also think that they're kidding themselves if they really think that all autistic people are able to function on the same level. My brother is severely autistic (as in he generally wears a helmet for his own protection because he'll smash his head open against the wall otherwise and is unable to use the restroom on his own) and he'll never be able to do things like live alone or hold down a job while I have asperger's and am able to live a very independent life, go to college, etc.

I think it depends. I don't like glorifying it, but I do think people should feel good and positive about themselves even if the are different.

Then do it about the parts of them worth celebrating.

Let me clarify. Pretty much all of qualifications for autism spectrum are not things that something most people would be proud of and the people under are it too varied for blanket positivity to really mean anything. It's not something I feel really comfortable about celebrating.

Yeah... I mean, I really do reject the inspiration porn, and I also reject people acting like anyone on the spectrum is a lost cause and doesn't even deserve a voice. At the same time, it's easy for me to say that because I had a friend in college with autism and she wasn't a tragic "lost cause" at all, yeah, she had some pretty significant struggles, and I don't think anyone needs to undermine them either. Plus, there ARE people whose kids really are severely disabled. So I think it's mostly finding the balance between mourning people for having autism and acknowledging that there's many degrees and challenges within the spectrum.

If you go too far with it, you get people like Chris chan. Adults who, if they hadn't been told there was nothing wrong with them and they were perfect, could have functioned in the real world. Now he's a thirty three year old man who assaults people over sonic boom, doesn't ever bathe, and spends the majority of his money on legos instead of food.

Da

chris Chan is the extreme case I have to say because, having such freakish extensive Internet troll info on him, his parents half coddled half neglected, and then his sense of reality was in no way helped by over 10 years if an obsessive, trolling, stalking Internet.

Difficulty functioning only made worse

The internet didn't make him who he is, the Gamestop assault and the hit and run, for example, were all him lashing out at being banned. He was a lost cause before the internet found him, to be honest.
