I really hate the term "POC" and want SJWs to stop treating us a united whole.

You sound white. And even if you aren't, who the fuck are you to dictate how other POCs want to be called?

Re: confession thread

(Anonymous) 2015-04-04 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
You sound black.

We don't all want to have to deal with the problems of your community, and pretend its central to our identity.

Racist, classist piece of shit.

DA

If black people don't want to deal with the problems of arab people, is that racist of them? Should they be beholden to help?

How is class even a factor in this until you assumed it was?

Re: confession thread

Because that word is used as sweeping collector of all non-white people making white people the default color. As in there's white and then there is POC. It's a very American centric idea where in that country the majority race is white. But what about countries like China or India. Should you use that American centric term? It strikes me as very arrogant and imperialistic.

Officially drinking one in memory of childings

You sound white.

Re: confession thread

Me too. I hate when people talk about POC like we all face the same challenges and social issues. We don't. No, the black American experience is not comparable to a latino or asian American experience and vice versa. Only a person who has never experienced any would equate them.

Re: confession thread

SA

^ what I mean by this is that we all face issues because we're not white, but they're different issues and can't be called "POC problems." Police are racist against POC? No, they're racist against black people, I've never heard of asian people having this problem. Affirmative action is racist against asians? Black people don't have this problem. Immigration issues? That's a majority latino/hispanic issue and has almost no relevance to black or asian people.

Yet they're all "POC issues". My ass

+1

Re: confession thread

(Anonymous) 2015-04-04 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed.

I also hate how they insist of doing a hierarchy of "most" to "least" oppressed race -- which ignores how situational oppression is and how much it is dictated by circumstance.

+2 POC is a horrible term and I struggle to see how different it is from using 'colored'. It lumps everyone into one convenient parcel of white vs. nonwhite and I'm so glad it's not a word used IRL outside of the USA.

Re: confession thread

(Anonymous) 2015-04-04 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously, right? Like, when did this become ok again? Sheesh, guys!

Re: confession thread

(Anonymous) 2015-04-04 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Funny that most people I know who use that term are "POC," then.

Myself, I try not to, but when you're talking about racism that affects more than one race other than white, it's a lot more convenient to have an easier term than "nonwhite people" (and some people object to that because they feel it enforces white as the default race).

Re: confession thread

(Anonymous) 2015-04-04 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
how does POC not enforce white as the default race

Re: confession thread

(Anonymous) 2015-04-04 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Most of the people I know who are "POC" don't like the term. Because we're from a different culture and don't want to be lumped in like we're all identical because people are too lazy to specify what culture they're talking about.

What is it with people on this forum thinking they can prove something by saying, "BUT MY PERSONAL ANECDOTE!!!"

Re: confession thread

(Anonymous) 2015-04-04 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
It depends on the situation. I think there's some merit in saying things like "women of color experience sexism very differently from white women," because it's saying racism and sexism both function there? Or if we're talking very generally about racism and white supremacy, sure. But if we're talking about the specifics of racism and assuming every group experiences it the same way, no. Not at all. That's when it should start getting broken down into actual identities, because the way Black Americans experience racism is going to be very, very different from the way Arab or Asian or Latina/o Americans do, etc. (And even those can be broken down further but. You know. Getting too far down the rabbit hole for what was supposed to be a short comment.)

I was really surprised when it started popping up, again. Is "POC" one of those things that started (again) on Tumblr under the guise of inclusivity? Us-against-them mentality? Solidarity?

No, it's been around for quite sometime. I know it was used a lot, by myself even, back in 2009 during one hell of a Star Trek thread and this was when F!S was still on LJ.

Really? Damn, this is something I've only noticed in the last two years, or so...
