Republicans in MO want to ban people on welfare from buying fresh food. They only want people on welfare to eat dried or canned goods, because they claim it is more nutritional. Really it is because they want to punish people on welfare more, and really rub their faces in being poor.

Nutritional, right. More likely they own stocks in canned food companies, and it's much harder to take a cut out of fresh produce.

If you're talking about HB 813, it's not "banning people on welfare from buying fresh food." It bans the use of SNAP benefits for buying energy drinks, chips, soda, cookies, seafood and steak. Now, this is still pretty intrusive and paternalistic, especially because people who are run off their feet buy energy drinks to keep themselves going when they have no time to sleep or energy to fix a decent meal. But obnoxious as this bill is, nobody would be made to go without fresh fruit and vegetables or healthy protein because of it. FFS get your facts straight because the reality is bad enough.

They said they're trying to ban fresh food, which they are in the case of fresh beef protein (steaks) and seafood. Sure, a little hyperbole, but this bill us utter crapola as, once again, the GOP in Missouri try to fix a problem that doesn't exit.

I don't know about you, but to me, and probably to most people who read that comment, "ban welfare recipients from eating fresh food" implied "ban welfare recipients from eating any/all fresh food," not just restrict them from using SNAP to purchase a handful of premium items which, as you admit yourself, they probably were not going to buy anyway.
