What disease can you get from bathing in the Nile?

Nah. I'm careful. I don't just text someone and meet them. I talk to them for a while, look for red flags, meet in a public place... that sort of thing.

I also live in a somewhat small community so the same ads pop up over and over and people will leave warnings about users who are bad news or lying about age/pic/etc.

Anonymity serves me more than it does whoever I'm meeting up with, anyway.

The Koran is pretty good bible fic except for some retcons for the self insert author justifying his pedophilia

Mostly because the writing is terrible on 4/7 seasons - the first two and the last two - and barely passable on 2 of the remaining 3.

It was especially terrible when it tried to deal with real world issues, often ending up a damn good example of the issue they were trying to deal with. Angel One and the "gay" episode being good examples - though to be fair to that one, everyone involved wanted to do it better, but they weren't allowed, though the fact that they were using gender issues as a "scifi" stand in for sexuality is problematic in itself.

And when they tried to do Big Ideas, they were rarely able to strike a balance between dealing with the Idea and covering the characters. Which wouldn't be so bad, if it weren't for the fact that they fairly consistently handled the Ideas in such a lame, internally inconsistent way. "All Good Things..." is the probably the second-worst Trek episode ever, rating about 10 "Spock's Brain"s, or half a "Threshold". (I will give it this - it's one of the few Idea episodes that actually dealt with the characters fairly well.)

Oh, look, an internet atheist trying too hard. What was that about stereotypes?

So, have you ever noticed how easy it is to get people to start eating certain foods by presenting them as a "healthy alternative?" Have you ever noticed how easy it is to get people to stop eating other foods by listing off the compounds that comprise them and claiming that they're actually scary chemicals? Have you ever noticed how people will buy more of a product after a really good ad campaign, and buy less of a product after a really good smear campaign? How about political ads? Ever notice how they actually work, even when they're complete bullshit and don't actually say anything about the candidates?

We all accept that media influences people in those ways. Hell, we sometimes allow it to influence ourselves: we see an ad for something, and it's effective, so we go and we buy it. But we'll fight tooth and nail against the notion that the ideal image can also be marketed to us, even as we watch the people around us get sucked in by the latest diet or exercise craze; even as we watch them change their hair and clothes in response to a change in trends; even as we watch them buy bogus skincare products and wrinkle cream and fancy deodorant and hair plugs and body wash that'll supposedly make women take off their panties and throw them at you... The evidence is everywhere, but we don't want to believe that we're susceptible, so we tell ourselves it has no effect.

Re: This secret makes me sad.

I think you're taking the secret a little too seriously if you think fandom secrets is going to start foaming at the mouth (frankly if someone did, I'd assume they were the one trolling rather than OP, just going by the usual mindset of this place). OP struck me as being silly, but possibly a bit serious in people quoting the bible without reading it. And there is bible fandom, certainly so for works like Jesus Christ Superstar and such, so it's not completely out of nowhere.

Plus, we've had similar secrets satirizing fandom/the Bible like a hundred times, it's been done.

Tell me something interesting, FS.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-04 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Surely the geeks and nerds of FandomSecrets can dredge up some eldritch facts from their vast repositories of knowledge that are more interesting than today's secrets, or the current threads in GC.

TL;DR: Give me all the interesting factoids you know, FS.

Recycling above answer: handling venomous snakes.
There's also: swimming with sharks and stingrays, jumped part of an olympics show jumping course, forward-facing abseiling.

I like heights and things that go fast or bite. I'm not a good role-model for small children.

It bugs me when people refer to the bible as fiction too, but that's just me being pedantic. We don't know who exactly wrote a lot of it and how they thought of it. It's not fiction if the person writing it thought it was true. Plus the New Testament is really more self-help than anything. But people who haven't read it tend to think it's nothing but the gospels.

Schistosomiasis, infection by parasitic worms.

It's not weird at all - honestly I'm surprised I haven't gotten worse on AMA's here. I actually love old weapons, though I'm more of a sword girl. I have one, but it's mostly a prop, and I'd like to own a battle-read one once (but they're not cheap)

(Anonymous) 2015-04-04 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Years and years ago, I think I read some legitimately nice ones... perhaps at Adultfanfiction? I vaguely remember being impressed by one Jesus/Judas fic in particular, very angsty and sexy, but I can't remember if it was there or somewhere else.

can you not

n/p I'm sure there are a lot of people who are curious, but yeah... after a few people I know lost their jobs for writing porn, I've just had the not revealing my job title or work location policy in place since then.

I guess it's similar to teachers getting fired for posting nude selfies, but holy shit does it ever suck that mostly innocent stuff like that can ruin a career.

Please for the love of the unholy loincloth someone tell me there's a Zardoz fandom and where to find it.

Parents can choose to turn off the tv. Parents can choose not to buy Barbies or Bratz, or clothes that look like they were made for strippers instead of for eight year olds. Nobody HAS to support the entertainment industry and it's abundance of underweight women and toxic messages.

Fair enough. That was surprisingly informative, actually.

That was kind of my point though…you can't look like her naturally since she herself did not achieve that look naturally.

Sure, for others it might be possible to be very thin naturally, but they wouldn't look like the actress.

A variant of Crazy Chicken, only with bats and Vampires. Was a free special from a musical company which used it to promote their Dance of Vampires musical, I think?

Anyway, it was hilarious. The faces of the bats were kinda absurd, and the sound effects were awesome. So so funny!

Re: Characterization You Hate

(Anonymous) 2015-04-04 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Speaking of Supernatural (and I agree with you about fandom!Lucifer. Come on fandom, let the dude be Satan-y), I always get annoyed by people's characterization of John. Now, I definitely don't think the guy was father of the year by any means and he did indeed fuck both of his sons up pretty good, but he wasn't an abusive monster who constantly beat/raped/pimped out Dean and/or Sam while being dunk 24/7. Just because he wasn't a great father doesn't mean he was...that.
