Wow. He's a hero.

I gave up when she had a kid...another thing she said she would never do (not saying that no woman ever changes her mind about having children, but it felt really weird for her character specifically)

If you want to use false equivalences to be an asshole to religious people nothing's stopping you?

If Tumblr is your primary exposure to young people, I suggest you interact on a much wider frame of reference.

Despite what it wants to think, the Tumblr hivemind is not reality, nor does it make up more than a miniscule percentage of it. If most of the kids on Tumblr tried behaving offline the way they do on that site, then the real world is going to be a massive shock to the system for them. No one gives a fuck about your triggers in daily real life. No one is going to cater to your feelings or use labels you care about.

It has nothing to do with fandom, except insofar as fandom serves the same kind of role by providing younger people with places to deal with and express their identities in a space with other likeminded people. And the very reason they have to do this, be it over fandom feelings, or gender identities, or race, or weight, or whatever else, is because the world outside the digital sphere is banging home all those norms (white, cis, straight, skinny, attractive etc.) and those people who don't fit the mold only have spaces like that to retreat to.

Do you honestly think that means the things they're dealing with are anywhere close to being accepted? If they were, then they wouldn't need such spaces, that's the whole point.

Image: promo art for the original show Jem and the reboot movie

Text: I know I shouldn’t complain about a movie that’s not out yet, but this is definitely not the Jem movie I wanted.

Why do they have to modernize it? I loved the show because it was so 80s.

I didn’t expect a good movie, I just wanted some campy fun.

SB: “Hollywood is ruining my childhood” has been said too many times already.

This is the only Trek that I find cringingly bad.

I'm sorry. D:

If it's any consolation, that's usually the best advice at least when a dog on a leash encounters another aggressive dog. The animal has a better chance of either fending the aggressor off, or running away/finding a safe space to hide if it's not quite literally tethered to you. You as the owner stand a much higher chance of being bitten or otherwise attacked too if you keep the animal nearby.

Re: Actually..

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
i know, right?

seriously, how can some people be so thick.

it IS an issue, and it does affect people. "lol just filter the images your kids watch" - like PLEASE this is the internet, when has that ever worked

people don't exist in a media-less bubble and to pretend media has zero influence at all is just being deliberately obtuse

Re: Actually..

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
People don't like the idea that they aren't in complete control of themselves 100% of the time.

Image: playing cards and chess pieces

Text: Whenever i get into a new fandom, i always have a compulsive need to find out which card and which chess piece would fit each character

some characters would be a knight some would be the queen some a bishop, etc etc.

S!B i have the feeling this is super dorky and not something normal people do :(

Re: Characterization You Hate

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
OMG this.

especially the idea that someone can "save" someone else from mental illness and everything will be okay

NOPE. WRONG. nobody should be under that kind of pressure to save another person. YOU CAN'T, IT'S IMPOSSIBLE. people need to save themselves, which is the whole point of therapy.

Re: Characterization You Hate

ugh i hate it when writers shoehorn characters into cliched uke/seme roles. and then just erase everything that made those characters who they are.

On the (other) bright side, that movie is most likely going to bomb.

Re: Tessa Stone returns

Same. I enjoyed reading the comic while it was there.

But it annoys me how she's trying to pretend nothing never happened, like it didn't exist.

If she just issued SOME sort of apology, some kind of acknowledgement, ANYTHING AT ALL, I would have a lot more respect for her.

I worded myself poorly. I didn't mean to imply that public schools are all automatically very diverse - but they are, as a whole, much more diverse than private schools or homeschool coalitions. And in general a kid will be exposed to many more things in school of any kind than at home with just their family.

Re: Warning: Christian heresy? Catholic heresy? Also sexual asasult

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
lol wat

that sounds like some crazy crack. more specifically, the "mary magdalene was a pagan priestess" sounds like something Silver Ravenwolf would write.

what were their sources for this stuff?

Re: Actually..

[personal profile] diet_poison 2015-04-05 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
I think that goes without saying, but since there is no way to totally isolate a kid (and you'd be cutting out a lot of good things too, if there were) a sounder approach is to discuss them with kids and help them process them in a healthy way. Of course, moderation isn't a bad thing and moderating TV exposure is good for a number of reasons - not trying to say it's not. It just shouldn't, imo, be seen as a solution to the media problem.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
You realize it's probably still going to be campy fun, just not 80s. Or do you want to shut out any new fans from getting into Jem?

this is true. I'm guilty of it myself.
