A lot of stuff that is popular is not good. This goes for comics, animation, television, movies and um... everything.

I think the Oatmeal can be amusing but it's not laugh out loud or "OMG I died" funny. It's humor you could find in a lot of random webcomics it just was lucky to get popular.

Not luck. Matthew Inman is quite upfront about the fact that he's deliberately crafted internet popularity on purpose. In fact, as you go through his comics, you can see that he always has a specific, educated guess about what's got good odds of going viral that day. Sometimes it works and one of his comics is suddenly everywhere on social media, more often it doesn't quite click. But nobody bats a thousand.

I'd still say luck has a little something to do with it though, because I've seen a lot of creators do things just for popularity before and fall flat on their faces.

It tends to be kind of random what people will buy into and what people won't. Like you said nobody bats a thousand, and some people don't even get the chance to take a swing.
