A lot of stuff that is popular is not good. This goes for comics, animation, television, movies and um... everything.

I think the Oatmeal can be amusing but it's not laugh out loud or "OMG I died" funny. It's humor you could find in a lot of random webcomics it just was lucky to get popular.

Not luck. Matthew Inman is quite upfront about the fact that he's deliberately crafted internet popularity on purpose. In fact, as you go through his comics, you can see that he always has a specific, educated guess about what's got good odds of going viral that day. Sometimes it works and one of his comics is suddenly everywhere on social media, more often it doesn't quite click. But nobody bats a thousand.

I hear you, OP. The Oatmeal, similar comics, and IMO most of geek culture is getting so nauseatngly self-congratulatory.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
*nauseatingly (damnit crappy keyboard)

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I agree.

I've never laughed at The Oatmeal or Hyperbole and a Half (which seems to be the same sort of humor), but I wouldn't write them off completely. For instance: http://theoatmeal.com/comics/dog_paradox

It seems like a lot of the humor is more of an "I get that!" kind of thing, like with the 'pirating GoT' comic.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel that way about a lot of webcomics.

I think it's sometimes funny, but mostly I think it's just vaguely recognizable and relatable to people and that's why they like it.

I hate The Oatmeal. It's not funny and its art is just ugly to look at. It makes me really annoyed that it's so popular. I don't usually get annoyed by stuff like that, but something about this comic strikes a nerve, I guess.

I liked a few of them, but after a while of archive-crawling, I suspected they are written with a lot of calculation, rather than actual passion for the subjects.

I like the Oatmeal, but yeah, a lot of the time it's not actually funny.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
this comic and another one (I don't know what it's called, but it has animals and is kind of cutesy) always show up on my tumblr dash, and I don't find them funny at all, even though they seem really popular.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a stupid comic, mostly. But I can indulge a completely sophomoric, ridiculous, and vulgar side of me when I see it. Therefore, I enjoy it. Someone out there has to do this sort of thing for other people, and Matt Inman is incredibly talented at it. He's a young millionaire who certainly knows what he's doing.

I really like The Oatmeal. But I totally get the feeling of not getting something that most or many people find funny. We all just have different senses of humor. Someone remind my brother of this fact.

I really don't care for Cyanide and Happiness, for example. It has its moments, but the super dark morbid humor is not my style, and the art does nothing to redeem it. (The art in The Oatmeal is just as bad, but I don't care as much when I find the content funny.)

A lot of popular things tend to be overrated, yeah. I like The Oatmeal, though. It's not my favorite webcomic, but I'm not asking for the artistic skills of Picasso combined with the wit of Oscar Wilde here, I just want the occasional chuckle as I'm killing time. I also respect Inman's ability to basically craft and market a comic out of virtually nothing.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
He was funny ... then he started asking people for money all the time for various projects, and I lost interest. I think he's pretty up himself and that puts me off his comics.

This goes for most humor on the internet lately. People find it so hilarious, and I'm just standing there going, "Really?"

I'm a fan of the Oatmeal, but I didn't think they were big shot enough to warrant a secret.

I thought everyone had realized that the Oatmeal was more about SEO than humor

Text: I think The Oatmeal is overrated and funny. The grammar comics are amusing, but other than that? MEH.

Is this really what passes for humour nowadays?
