I agree he's not Kirk, but then I never cared for Kirk in the first place and wasn't a big fan of TOS so he isn't the worst thing in the franchise for me.

I barely recognize the new Star Trek movies as Star Trek movies though, they're fun popcorn flicks but they don't really feel like Star Trek.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, because Star Trek is totally deep and stuff.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
da
Well it's certainly a hell of a lot more thoughtful then the reboot movies.

If you see no difference between the throwaway trash that is the reboots and the original movies, then I feel deeply, deeply sorry for you.

Someone got in my head for these two panels.

I really like those panels! Thanks for sharing, Feo. Where's it from?

It's from a comic called El Goonish Shive . . .

Man, I feel like I'm walking into a firestorm by introducing you to EGS. It's a comic that tries really hard to be inclusive and positive to a wide variety of genders and orientations, so naturally it's been slammed by people who think it's sexist and transphobic. I don't think it's either of those things, but I don't know what you'd make of it, given the sort of stuff you write.

Oh, I've heard of it! No wonder it looked familiar; I just couldn't place the name.

I'm honestly unlikely to read it. I hear EGS is pretty good, but my dislike of the magic genital-swap trope is so strong, I wouldn't be able to stagger through.

Also, hasn't it been around for ages, and have a monster archive?

Yeah, it's ancient, and it started off really shaky. It got good eventually, but it took a while to get there.

Yeah, I actually know of it from back in the day when "transgender webcomics" meant genital swap. *nostalgic sigh* Don't miss those days, for sure! I'm glad EGS got good. Definitely not my thing though.

It is.

(..in the alternate reality created by some of its fans)

AYRT, I never recall saying Star Trek was the deepest thing in existence and that we should all bow down to it. But there IS a certain philosophy behind it which the new movies don't do a great job of bringing in.

The reboot movies just have a different tone, good or bad or which you prefer really doesn't matter to me, it just doesn't feel like Trek.

Not deep, but more speculative and thoughtful, yes.
