That's a pretty common opinion in the part of fandom I hang out, so you're not alone. *g* I can't help but love him, though - he reminds me so much of the Kirk from the novels. And that was the Kirk I got to know first, years before I ever watched a single episode, so the nostalgia factor is huge for me. And it doesn't hurt that I find him hot, too. *g*

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know which of the novels you were reading, but I can assure you that even the Kirk of the worst novels (How Much For Just The Planet), are nothing like that yahoo up there. When they put this version of Kirk on a starship, a village somewhere lost its idiot.

I like him because I find him hot and can easily see him as fanfic Kirk in my favorite aliens-made-them-do-it. With Bones, preferably. New-Bones.

He's like Captain Kirk from a Star Trek fanfic written by Michael Bay.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
BAHAHAHA omg yes.

I didn't hate AOS Kirk until I sat down and watched TOS and fell in love with Shatner's Kirk. He was so much better.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, yes, and also, yes. Shatner's Kirk is the one true Kirk. I found Reboot!Kirk amusing in the first film, but he is such an overblown caricature of Kirk.

Someone else pointed out that TOS didn't have super-emotional Kirk vs super-logical Spock. It was highly excitable McCoy vs coldly logical Spock, with Kirk as the mediator between the two.

All in all, a missed opportunity.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree he's not Kirk, but then I never cared for Kirk in the first place and wasn't a big fan of TOS so he isn't the worst thing in the franchise for me.

I barely recognize the new Star Trek movies as Star Trek movies though, they're fun popcorn flicks but they don't really feel like Star Trek.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, because Star Trek is totally deep and stuff.

He's a themepark version of the character. He's not Kirk, he's Zapp Brannigan.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
While Zachary Quinto just came across as too dickish to be a truly good Spock, Chris Pine was just badly cast. Nothing about him reminded me of the original Kirk at all.
Like comment above said, nuTrek is just Star Trek fanfic written by Michael Bay.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
They got the wrong Chris as Kirk. Of course the other one had a contract for some sort of technosword and sorcery movie series. I forget what that role was.

Honestly, almost everyone was ruined

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Except for Captain Pike and Bones

Captain Pike because he had so little personality in TOS and Bruce Greenwood has so much charisma that he couldn't help be improved

Bones was still great because Karl Urban is amazing. He unfortunately had such a small part that it didn't amount to much.

But everyone else?

Sulu was WAY WAY too stoic. Not bad, but nothing like Takei's Sulu.
Chekov was this pure innocent. Which isn't at all like TOS Chekov, who was a bit of a player and much laxer with the rules.
Spock was so fucking mean all the time. And inconsiderate. Whereas in TOS he was woobie who displayed quiet competence.
Uhura could be a real asshole and no ever called her on her shit.
Kirk too was ruined. A fucking idiot frat boy with no respect for women instead of a professional officer.
Scotty was turned into a joke. TOS Scotty might have had moments of levity, but he was also portrayed as a very decent and intelligent man too.

I was not a fan of the second film (understatement), but the first film? I could buy that that guy grew into the Kirk of TOS.

(Though, that was before it was explained to me that I was Doing It Wrong because reboot Kirk is a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT timeline/universe than "our" Kirk.)

I always thought he made a better Kirk than Quinto's Spock, but that might have more to do with writing.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh. I like this Kirk. Shatner liked to chew the scenery a little too much for me. It's Quinto's Spock I can't stand.

ALL OF YOU FUCKING STOP

(Anonymous) 2015-04-06 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes, in life, people will like things that you dislike.

And sometimes, people will dislike things that you like.

There is NOTHING you can do about it. No amount of whining or writing up obsessive screeds or shouting "WELL YOU HAVE BAD TASTE" will change that. Ever. All it winds up doing is making you look like a little baby who's so emotionally fragile that you can't take it when someone doesn't agree with you.

STOP. JUST STOP ALREADY.

"Worst thing ever to happen to Star Trek" is some pretty strong medicine, man. I don't know how you can even go that far.

Actually, I don't think he was that bad anyway. I'm not a huge fan of the prequels by any means, but it's not because of the actors, and I really liked him in the second half of ST09 particularly. I don't think any of their flaws come from him really.
