Gaiman is... the imagination behind most idle daydreams, for many people. Either you're the sort that sat on the subway and imagined there was something in the shadows, that you could reach another world by following the 'path' caused by reflection of the moon over water, if the little farmhouse down the way had residents that had been there for a *very* long time... or, you weren't the sort of person that had an imagination like that.

If you were, then Gaiman gives you everything your imagination wanted, and if you weren't, then generally you aren't going to be as into it.

Wow. This is the most up your own ass comment I've ever read. You can have an imagination about life, ponder what's in the shadows, imagine a secret world behind the life we see on the surface... and still find Neil Gaiman a lame ass writer.

Yeah, sure, you can imagine different things, and maybe they aren't any better or worse (seriously, chill - no one's saying your imagination isn't perfectly special in its own way) than the ones Gaiman thinks up. But Gaiman does a certain version that a lot of people connect to.

Oh wow. You are a piece of work. So long.

Well... it was nice of you to take the effort to say goodbye? Seriously, I've never understood why, if some people have absolutely nothing to say, they won't just refrain from saying anything.

Haven't you ever dealt with someone who you felt you needed to respond to, only you had no idea what you could possibly say in response?

(To further this point, I've typed and deleted three attempts to explain further. I want to convey how patronizing you just were, but I can't think of a way to say it that won't result in you going "What? I wasn't patronizing at all!" and concluding I'm an idiot.)

I suppose if I can't think of something to say I generally don't say anything - seems simpler. And when someone can't think of a better reply than "Um... well... something... something about things up your ass!" there's not a way to civilly reply that isn't going to sound a little patronizing, because any non-frothing response is going to sound like sarcasm.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
You tried, feotakahari. And for the record, your comment was exactly what went through my head.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what visp is like. She doesn't show up often on FS, but I've noticed that when she does, it's not uncommon for her to say something condescending or sometimes downright nasty for no discernible reason. I've never seen her get called on it, either, this is the first time.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
(Original anon who though visp's comment was obnoxious) Let's not turn this into a personal attack thread, yeah? I thought the comment was pretty obnoxious, and I can believe what you're saying is true, but I don't think it's worth dogpiling them over. Let's just let it go.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
You're not to be against dogpiling but small nitpick: criticizing what someone says is not a personal attack.

Example:

"I find your argument specious and lacking in sensitivity." = not a personal attack

"I find your face reminiscent of ripening roadkill and your mother dresses you funny." = personal attack

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I take your point. I'm just super wary of this descending into one of those hate threads.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-06 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed, she often talks down to people and makes unpleasant comments. I don't think I've ever seen her get called on it.

That comment really was incredibly condescending and pretentious, though, even for her.

"special imagination" - are you fucking kidding me

I did it two years ago. http://fandomsecrets.dreamwidth.org/750889.html?thread=625225257#cmt625225257

How I'm feeling too.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
This comment is satirical, right?

[personal profile] feotakahari 2015-04-05 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, Gaiman is nowhere near the closest I've seen to a writer like that. The closest is probably that one who wrote about a woman who journeys to a magical land to guide and mentor the ghost of her aborted fetus. (I seriously wish I could remember the title. The ghost is named Pepsi. It's insane.)

I wish you could remember the title too. It sounds like something I would like.

Hey man, everyone's gotta find their own favorite. And honestly, that one sounds odd enough that a little google-fu will find it for you. Good luck.

Oh, I wasn't saying I liked it. I'm not fond of that writing style, to say the least. I'm just saying it was all dream-logicky.

Looks like it.

No, no-one has imagined things like you have. You're just unique. Or incredibly self-centered.
