Gaiman is so overrated. The praise his books get makes me wonder if the reviewers haven't read anything else, ever.

+1

You are gonna cut yourself on the edge of this totally revolutionary new opinion, you little daredevil!

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT Sometimes it can feel like you're the only person with this opinion in a world full of slavishly devoted Gaiman fans.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, your lot in life must be very hard indeed.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
In Soviet Russia, Neil Gaiman fanboys you.

Defensive Gaiman fan detected.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Not defensive as much as tired of all these people who think they are cool for hating on things. I'm not even the biggest Gaiman fan but I can't stand these wannabe elitist hipster haters who think hating on the popular stuff makes them somehow "better" than others. It's pathetic. (Like all those "Loki sucks" secrets that kept popping up after The Avengers.) We get it, you think you're the next great literature critic for calling a popular writer ~overrated~.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
The backlash isn't from people trying to be cool, it's from people tired of a so-so writer being lauded as a literary genius and having his stuff always being shoved in your face.

God forbid people dislike a popular author. SACRE BLEU!

I feel you.

Gaiman is... the imagination behind most idle daydreams, for many people. Either you're the sort that sat on the subway and imagined there was something in the shadows, that you could reach another world by following the 'path' caused by reflection of the moon over water, if the little farmhouse down the way had residents that had been there for a *very* long time... or, you weren't the sort of person that had an imagination like that.

If you were, then Gaiman gives you everything your imagination wanted, and if you weren't, then generally you aren't going to be as into it.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. This is the most up your own ass comment I've ever read. You can have an imagination about life, ponder what's in the shadows, imagine a secret world behind the life we see on the surface... and still find Neil Gaiman a lame ass writer.

Yeah, sure, you can imagine different things, and maybe they aren't any better or worse (seriously, chill - no one's saying your imagination isn't perfectly special in its own way) than the ones Gaiman thinks up. But Gaiman does a certain version that a lot of people connect to.

Oh wow. You are a piece of work. So long.

This comment is satirical, right?

Honestly, Gaiman is nowhere near the closest I've seen to a writer like that. The closest is probably that one who wrote about a woman who journeys to a magical land to guide and mentor the ghost of her aborted fetus. (I seriously wish I could remember the title. The ghost is named Pepsi. It's insane.)

I wish you could remember the title too. It sounds like something I would like.

Hey man, everyone's gotta find their own favorite. And honestly, that one sounds odd enough that a little google-fu will find it for you. Good luck.

No, no-one has imagined things like you have. You're just unique. Or incredibly self-centered.

I like Neverwhere. ::shrugs::

(Anonymous) 2015-04-07 12:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I enjoy his books, but I find them lackluster compared to his oral performances (speeches, live readings, etc). I wouldn't say they're totally undeserving of praise, though. A bit simplistic, perhaps, but not everything has to be ~deep~ and ~meaningful~ to be enjoyable.
