Gaiman is so overrated. The praise his books get makes me wonder if the reviewers haven't read anything else, ever.

Gaiman is... the imagination behind most idle daydreams, for many people. Either you're the sort that sat on the subway and imagined there was something in the shadows, that you could reach another world by following the 'path' caused by reflection of the moon over water, if the little farmhouse down the way had residents that had been there for a *very* long time... or, you weren't the sort of person that had an imagination like that.

If you were, then Gaiman gives you everything your imagination wanted, and if you weren't, then generally you aren't going to be as into it.

I'm kinda meh about Pratchett in general, and I know Gaiman only from Sandman. Good Omens - it was okay reading it the first time, didn't get very far when I tried re-reading, though. Not really my type of humour, I guess.

I started reading it, but dropped it.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
It was a book of its time. In the post-millennial, post-conspiracy theory era (because where is the fun in making up all encompassing conspiracies, when the government is spying on literally everybody) and with a different social context, it just does not work. It is a book from before the world fell in love with spiteful conflict again.

Re-reading GO is difficult for me. The childhood that the book is nostalgic for was my childhood. It was a different world, and reading it reminds me how much things have changed. The internet has made the world smaller and pettier.

This is one of the few books I dropped almost as fast as Atlas Shrugged. The humor just did not work for me.

Hahahaha, there was a whole giant discussion about this in my Bollywood stream last night.

I pretty much took this stance. I'm not a huge fan of Neil Gaiman's stuff and I don't love this as much as I love Pterry's other books, so I see Pterry as the positive influence. But then other people aren't a huge fan of Pterry and see Gaiman as the positive influence, so... yeah.

~everything is subjective~

Curious.

Can't get into Terry Pratchett, and I do prefer Neil Gaiman's work pre-AFP.

I also love angels, demons, and apocalyptic/post-apocalyptic fiction. It's really not shocking that some of us like this book when others think it's stinky poo-poo.

I like that someone made a good natured book that's a parody of both The Omen *and* Just William, but most of Pratchett's other work is a lot better and quite a bit of Gaiman's is.

I'm sort of baffled by this secret.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe they don't really like Pratchett's writing. Maybe they really like Gaiman's. Maybe they only like the combination of the two. Maybe they just really like the premise/ideas presented. There are lots of reasons for only enjoying one book by an author, especially when it's a collaboration.

Of all the Gaiman books I've read, this was the one I liked the best. American Gods was pretty good but hadn't a patch on this. Prachett provided the sense of humanity which I find vital.

Of all Pratchett books? Good Omens wouldn't even in the top five. Strata would take top place for me. It's severely underrated.

If Good Omens is one of Pratchett's lesser books than I can't wait to read his other stuff that I have shelved. Actually, this secret makes me want to buy all of his books.

I love most of Pratchett's work and don't like Gaiman much, but I still adore Good Omens. Not just out of nostalgia either. I reread it recently and while I find the kids boring, Aziraphale and Crowley are every bit as wonderful as the first time I read about them.

Personally, this is one of the few books of Prachett's I like simply because his writing style [and to some degree, the humor] in his own books just don't do anything for me.

It's really not that hard to get, since you obviously have at least one author you don't hate but don't enjoy the work of.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-06 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
It's definitely not the only Pratchett book I've read and liked (I don't think it's his worst or his best) but it is the only Gaiman book I've read and liked.

Image: the two cover art for Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman’s Good Omens

Text: I’m baffled by people who say this is the only Pratchett book they’ve ever read or liked. It’s not his worst book but it’s merely adequate due to Gaiman’s input. You’d have to go back to early Rincewind days to beat it for solid mediocrity.

I was already a Pratchett fan when I read Good Omens, but I found it a total letdown. I chalked that up to Gaiman's influence, even if I did enjoy American Gods (although not nearly as much as Small Gods).

I've always felt like a bad fantasy fan, because while I've slogged through a good number of Gaiman and Pratchett books, it was always hard, and there are precious few I've LIKED. Pratchett's humor just doesn't work for me, I guess, and Gaiman's usually way more into the mythology surrounding his story than the story itself, which meshes badly with my tastes.

At least they give me books I can rec to my friends!

The writing overall is kind of weak, especially the ending IMO. But I love the premise, the characters (especially Aziraphale, Crowley and DEATH) and some of the dialogue and one-liners.
