What are lesbian separatists?

IIRC, they want to go and live in lesbian-only communities. No contact with teh smelly menz. Or something.

I don't get what's so radical and political about it. People have been shutting themselves off in weird only-people-like-me communes since forever.

I think it's a radical act. Not necessarily saying it's a bad act, I don't care if that's what some people want to do, but any specific instance of saying "I'm going to go live in a cloistered community" will be radical unless it becomes commonplace. It's a very big and unusual life decision.

By what definition of radical? Depending on the type of community, it's downright reactionary. Take religious monks and nuns--they're carrying out an act that may have hundreds, if not thousands, of years of historied tradition and societal support behind it.

Something being unusual or uncommon doesn't make it radical.

"Radical" isn't mutually exclusive with "reactionary". It just refers to a drastic change. You're right, I didn't think of monks and nuns (though not all of them are really cloistered) and that's a tradition that's been going on for a long time. But if you just up and say "I'm going to start a new community and only lesbians are invited", that's not a trend with any real precedent, and it's a pretty drastic change from a typical lifestyle (in any society where your average person can afford to make a choice like that).

Try googling "political lesbian" and you'll see what's so political about it. Lesbian separatists are often also anti-trans people, aka TERF, and unfortunately concentrate more on "who is an acceptable womyn" "who is an acceptable lesbian" that it makes the worst SJW online wank look like kids arguing in a sandpit.

/a lesbian who is most definitely not a separatist, especially after sharing a flat with two political lesbians

I'll take your word for it. I've already accepted that political lesbians are just one of those things that I will never, ever understand.

This is a lesbian separatist talking about fanfic: https://liberationcollective.wordpress.com/2013/03/30/lesbian-bdsm-part-1-lesbian-bdsm-in-fan-fiction/

Seriously, they're basically all like that. It's hilarious and sad at the same time.

holy shit, that's a pretentious post. :/

Overall the blog seems like your average TERF hangout.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-06 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. Weird, hateful stuff for no clear reason. Honestly, though, I find the tiny, limited list of acceptable sexual desires in that article to be more funny than anything. One of those cases where stupidity is its own punishment, you know?
diet_poison: (Default)

[personal profile] diet_poison 2015-04-06 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
Is there actually a list? I must have missed it.

I'm assuming it doesn't include anything with dicks or dildos, or anything that involves submission.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-06 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
No dicks, no dildos, no fisting, no kink... basically cunnilingus, a little fingering, and cuddling.

Her theory seems to be that this is what authentic female libido SHOULD look like, we just need to fix all these obviously malfunctioning women who fail to fit her theory.

I have seen this narrative so many times, I really shouldn't be surprised by it anymore.

Here's how it goes:
-woman with issues gets involved in BDSM
-woman overcomes issues and finds she's no longer interested in BDSM
-woman decides that, because she had issues when she was involved with BDSM, BDSM is actually always bad all the time and only people with issues are ever involved in it

Also, as usual, there's a complete lack of acknowledgement of male submissives. But of course, that wouldn't fit in to the BDSM is a Symptom of the Patriarchy line.

They also conveniently ignore female doms, which there by nature have to be in cases of lesbian!BDSM

or maybe they just handwave that off to women breaking free of the chains of oppression and flexing her muscles of power or something

Based on that article, it looks like they think female dommes are buying into the patriarchy and joining in on the oppression of their fellow women.

It's so nice that she's allowing every woman the ability to define her own sexual experiences. I'm sure she's proud of the fact that she sees women as individuals in charge of their own sexual destinies, who are capable of making adult decisions.

/sarcasm

I'm almost offended at that drivel in the article - talk about one person trying to define something that is EXTREMELY complex and varied for all the women she claims to be standing up for. Yeeesh.
diet_poison: (Default)

[personal profile] diet_poison 2015-04-06 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
It's so, so, SO patronizing, isn't it? She basically says "I talked to these women who enjoy BDSM, and I wasn't able to make them see how they're wrong." She assumes any woman who likes it is supporting the patriarchy and hurting herself, even when they clearly enjoy it. She even states that BDSM is inherently harmful, which is such a slap in the face to any woman who has embraced it as part of making her own decisions about her sexuality.

Having a few woman decide what is best for all women isn't really better than having a few men decide that, tbqh. Radfems can take their condescending drivel and shove it.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
We believe that the world of mixed genders is inherently harmful to women. Heterosexual women have no choice but to try and fight for change because their sexuality ties them to men, but we aren't so confined. We can and do live our lives free of male influence.

There are varying levels to it, some women refuses to even live near men, some simply refuse to work with them, most of us are like myself and sit firmly in the middle and avoid them as best as possible.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol. People who think women can't be just as bad as men.
diet_poison: (Default)

[personal profile] diet_poison 2015-04-06 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
lol I like how you worded the bit about heterosexual women. It's like we're miserable about the fact that we have to spend time around men, oh no, poor us.

I like men. I don't like patriarchy and I don't like all men ever, but I don't feel like it's bad to have men in my life.

You do you, though. Whatever floats your boat and so forth.

[personal profile] quirkytizzy 2015-04-06 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
+ 1. I see no reason to mourn for my love of cock.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-06 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
That's not what I mean, though. Sorry if it seemed like it, I simply meant that heterosexual women would have to overcome their own inclination towards men if they were to become separatists, where as we have literally nothing tying us to men.

You like having men in your life? Fine, it's your life. But any heterosexual woman who does not like having men in their life would find that a separatist lifestyle would be difficult to maintain. People like sex.
diet_poison: (Default)

[personal profile] diet_poison 2015-04-06 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Ok. That makes mere sense.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-06 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
And I'm sure, when you encounter women who do all the bad things that men do (because bad behavior has no gender), you tell yourself, "well they're individual women! They don't represent women as a whole!"

Also, what race are you? If you're white, what place is there for women of other races in your communities? After all, as a while woman, you have been placed in a position of power and privilege above them. I'm assuming you're perfectly fine with them choosing to avoid you as best as possible due to your being part of this larger, more socially powerful group, and presuming that you are a Bad Person simply based on your race?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-06 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
So, you avoid having to actually do anything about what's wrong with society. Nice.
