They do! My work often involves the use of weighted blankets.

If this is helpful to you, the cheap ones are not all that expensive on amazon.

:o

I had no idea weighted blankets were a thing! All I knew was that covering myself with more/heavier blankets than strictly necessary to have something weighing down on me was very relaxing and helped me fall asleep faster (provided it wasn't a very hot time of the year).

They're definitely a thing.

That might be worth reading if you want to look into buying yourself one for sleep or insomnia issues.

Wow. This explains so much of my childhood. So much.

It is possible for those symptoms to lessen over time, right?

For example, as a child, I could not ride merry-go-rounds and play on swing-sets (My worse recurring nightmares involve that sense of "out of control weightless movement" or having to climb stairs and cross bridges that had no safety rails), but I'm okay with swing-sets now.

Although, to this day, I still cannot go up ladders. I can't. I freeze by the third step. I realize I'm barely three feet above ground and I could land safely with very minor bruises even if I lost my balance and fell, but it's like my brain cannot register the difference between 3 and 300 feet. I could be hanging off the ledge of a cliff for all it feels like.

I also could not eat texturized foods (like mermelade with fruit seeds. It felt like I was choking on them), touch certain fabrics or sleep on "scratchy" sheets, but that doesn't bother me now as an adult.

For some reason though, I used to swallow chewing gum and hard candy on accident, but now I can't swallow pills.

I think some people would agree with me if I told you that it's possible for those symptoms to lessen over time, and others would disagree.

But, given that the brain is a plastic organ and is constantly changing, I would say that it's possible for almost any symptom related to brain function to change over time, either becoming more or less severe.

Right. This is all very interesting! Sorry for flinging so many words at you like that.

Nah, don't be sorry. If typing out walls of text are helpful for you to process a new concept about yourself, I'm happy to be typed at lol.

Tell me more of this magic!

The link I posted upthread has a lot of relevant reading, but the short of it is that weighted blankets have been proven to have a calming effect and have been used in therapy for people with autism, insomnia, anxiety disorders, and PTSD for quite some time now.

They're not an option for everyone (nothing is really when it comes to therapy) but they're extremely useful for some people. So for the people unconsciously using extra blankets to "self medicate" this way, getting themselves a nice therapy blanket probably isn't a wasted expense.

I feel like this is something missing in my life.

I don't know how much of an option it is for you, but they can range from the slightly expensive to the very expensive to purchase one for yourself. If you have a therapist who uses them in your area I might suggest going in specifically to just test it out and see how you feel before committing to a purchase.

Well, it might be long term plan thing. I don't strictly need it, but it sounds really nice.

From what I've been told they are very nice. A few people with PTSD that I regularly talk to find that it's the only thing that calms them down.

As far as I know they are nice. Never tried one myself but I've talked to plenty of people who find that they're very useful therapeutic tools.
