Re: Complain here
(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)oh, or things claiming to be wheat and gluten free but then on the package it says "processed in a facility that also processes soy, nuts, wheat..." fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
Re: Complain here
Yep, and packaging that is just too vague and unhelpful to take a risk on, or when places have a gluten free menu but cook everything together.
Re: Complain here
(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)"Vegetal protein"
"food starch"
"modified food starch"
jeez, thank you ingredients label makers, that tells me all I need to know
Oh, and don't get me started on "flavor enhancers". They at least do list all the ingredients properly, but now I'm aware that I can never ever ever eat out or at a friend's because there's no way they'll admit they are adding "beef flavor" to their steaks or "chicken flavor" to their rice and soups. (This happened to my dad. He narrowly avoided getting very sick that night by virtue of being rightfully paranoid and asking to take a look at the kitchen supplies the person had lying around the stove.)
I've seen more people aware and accommodating of allergies and food intolerances over time which is an awesome thing, but it seems like the concept of cross-contamination is going to take a while longer to sink it.
....This has served to make me realize how much harder people with severe, life-threatening food allergies have it.
Re: Complain here
I would be so afraid of eating the wrong things or pissing off bees.
Yeah. You can't call anything safe unless you're certain about every little thing you put in it and where they came from and where it was cooked. Please don't tell me it's probably fine. Either it is or it's not.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)So it's for flavor! Huh! The more you know! No wonder I kept running into malt extract in so many things.
An importing company actually slapped a big, colorful "gluten-free" over a cereal which, while not listing any of the big 4 gluten-having cereals in its ingredients, I later found out wasn't gluten-free because of actual wheat cereals being produced in the same factory line. Major dick move, there.
