I imagine they're referring to the fact that A/B/O typically caters to audiences with a dubcon kink.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
It caters to audiences with a sex pollen kink, actually. Dubcon is optional.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Sex pollen is a form of dubcon though?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
sex pollen is noncon you dirty rape apologist!

(Anonymous) 2015-04-06 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Not really. Depending on the fic, the characters involved have a) talked about contingency plans, b) were already in a relationship, or c) have retrograde amnesia about the entire thing. The dubcon version of sex pollen exists and is probably more popular, but it isn't inherent in the trope anymore than dubcon is inherent to the a/b/o trope. It's just an occasional bonus for people who like it.

dubcon =/= rape. we've been over this. many times. dubcon exists in this murky area between consent and rape that only exists in fantasy, and a lot of people like it.

also wtf homophobia? how is that related at all

(Anonymous) 2015-04-06 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not saying it's logical. That's just what I figured they meant, because I've seen people make the claim before that A/B/O = dubcon = rape.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-06 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
not the anon you replied to but I'm p sure there's vast amounts of homophobic and misogynistic tropes in ABO fic, including the very premise that relies upon penetrator/penetratee as social standings and related to dominance and power

(Anonymous) 2015-04-06 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
i disagree that those are homophobic or misogynistic tropes

in particular:

the very premise that relies upon penetrator/penetratee as social standings and related to dominance and power

IT IS A FICTIONAL WORLD DESIGNED AROUND THAT BEING THE CASE

it's not like this is a case where people are writing a world that's meant to be ours where, coincidentally, dominance and power is continually linked to a specific sexual role. it's a whole concept meant for playing around with the connection between power and sexuality. which is hardly a new thing for god's sake.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-06 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
This. It's like complaining that, oh, Agent Carter is set in a sexist time, when that's literally the point. A/B/O exists to play with gender roles, so it's really not worth it to complain that A/B/O has gender roles.
