Also: Slightly off-topic, but I don't think it's the conservatism itself that's bad - if you have personal moral values, you should adhere to them, and conserving your faith keeps a culture alive - but it's the corruption of the religion by the people in it, either for their own personal gain or simply because of a misinterpretation - that is dangerous.

Most major religions were designed to give answers and comfort to an imperfect human race that had none. Even something like Scientology could potentially bring hope to someone, if the people in charge of it weren't extorting its members, harassing/spying on/murdering its critics and ex-members, and generally violating human rights in the worst ways possible. We had this problem with the Catholic church in the middle ages and we're having it with the Protestant and Muslim extremists today. They're taking something that's supposed to be used to help people and turning it into a weapon, and as both a WWJD Christian and a decent human being, that just doesn't fly with me.
