One of the reasons I love The Twelve Kingdoms so much is that the main character does desperately want to go back to her mundane life for most of the first story arc. Eventually she changes her mind, yes, but only out of a sense of duty and veeeeeeeeeeeery reluctantly.

I have no idea what secret 36 said, since it's been removed for bandwith sucking, so, probably 110% unrelated.

To clarify, the world of Twelve Kingdoms is... not so much adventure as soul-sucking misery for the main character. All alone in a foreign world, with no money, no friends, and monsters trying to kill you every night? Who wouldn't want to go home? But she deals with it, and it changes her as a person, and she becomes strong enough to know she has to stay, in the end.

Marche/FFTA is just dumb. ^^; But Twelve Kingdoms does it RIGHT. That's what I wanted to say.

Ahh! I should play it then. Yeah, I guess in those circumstances I'd want to go back home too. My ideal world is that my friends get dragged in it too and we all decide to go on Grand Adventures that may or may result in Saving the World. 8D

Actually, it's a series of novels that got turned into an anime. I think there is a game, but I've never played it since it hasn't been translated. But the first novel is out from TokyoPop now, and the second will be soon. :) The anime is out in its entirety, but they tone down the OMG GRIM stuff a bit.

And yeah, if I got to have buddies and super powers and sparkly world saving awesomeness, I would totally go for that kind of thing!

But what I love about TTK, is that it plays out... how I really think being dropped into another world would play out. The poor farmers are a mix of paranoid and hateful, two-faced and selfish, and the very occasional genuinely good person. The governments are sometimes corrupt, while others are efficient and benevolent. It takes months of walking to cross any one of the kingdoms, and if you don't have money to stay at inns along the way it's a long, hard slog. There's theft and petty betrayal and hunger and pain. It does all work out in the end, but it's the kind of journey that I can really believe in, even if it does involve magic and another world and so on. Youko goes through all the emotions I can believe a real person would, too--fear at first, wanting to go home, wanting to die, then intense paranoia after being betrayed several times, then slowly she finds her centre and a way to be true to herself. I ♥ Youko so much. ^^; I've wanted to app her at damned a few times, but I don't think I could do her justice. *laugh*

Oh, I thought it was a game... I must have been thinking of Dynasty Warriors LOL something like that. I definitely shall pick it up then, I like Tokyopop novels. +_+

Yeah, I forget that like... even in the other world, you'd need money and stuff, and there's just a whole new set of cultural rules to learn, and blah blah blah. It's not sunshine and daisies and all that crap. But I would like to have that experience at least once, cuz... you grow up! And I love "coming of age" stories, so yeah. +_+

... well, I suppose that would be why most people go to college. 8D;

BAW I THINK YOU'D PLAY HER JUST FINE. You never know until you try >8[!

[identity profile] roseargent.livejournal.com 2008-01-14 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, it's so much easier in games! Monsters drop money like crazy! Except in the marginally more rational world of FFXII, where you get their pelts/blood/whatever and sell them for money.

I dunno, Youko is so fully-formed and "real," it'd be like trying to play a real person, I think. The thought intimidates me. "Normal" (ie, more stereotypical) anime/vg characters are enough of a challenge as it is!

About your icon...

[identity profile] willag.livejournal.com 2008-01-14 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
I just wanted a confirmation on this... but is the character on your icon World of Elegance? That was the very first thing that popped into my head when I saw it. Man, I wanna read more Ah! My Goddess.

PS: I love Youko for the same reasons you do. She's very realistic and totally kicks major ass. And I love her interaction with Rakushun. Rakushun/Youko OTP!!

Re: About your icon...

[identity profile] roseargent.livejournal.com 2008-01-15 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, that's WoE. :) And here's a Hild, because she rocks and because I can. ^^

Dude, hell yes. Rakushun/Youko is the only pairing that makes sense to me, for Youko. Pretty as Keiki is, he's got a stick up his butt the size of Kinpa Palace. ;P I suppose I could see her with Suzu or Shoukei, maybe, but Rakushun/Youko is the real deal. ^^

[identity profile] demyx.livejournal.com 2008-01-14 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
It was a secret about the OP wanting her life to be turned upside down like Sora from Kingdom Hearts was. I basically said "IAWTC" with some commentary. XD

Well, I sort of understand, I suppose. It's something new and frightening and none of the protagonists ever asked for it, so I imagine they were happy with their mundane life. I personally would probably throw everything away to live the vagrant life of an RPG hero but I only say that because reality is boring. :[
