Did you choose this pic because John's watch is so expensive, OP? I remember reading about Sherlock's wardrobe where the watch's and the coat's price tags jumped out.

It makes sense if everybody else are not well off. Now I wonder how rich the OP's talking here. I won't judge in any case. I've read somewhere that the social capital counts too, like how many friends you have, if your profession is prestigious (nevermind if low paying), a family you have. It was some UK website...

Social capita alongside, Money and Education are the three tiers in how rich you are aka which class you belong to (and also which class you can climb too), according to Bordeu*. Which also means social capita is the hardest to get, because you can spend money to get an education and you can get money from an education**, but to be accepted in a higher class circle than you were born, you also have to know the right people, which is where social capita comes in.

Social capital can also at times be very hard to fake, as it also involves how you behave, speak and act. Also the things you like, wait I have a feeling I forgot a capita thing? Is there a fourth one?

Damn, ah well if you really want to know, just ask me, but that is the gist of it.

*I think? It's been a while sinse I took Sociology now.

Is it still aplyable in our time where we don't have such rigid social classes?
All three aspects help each other - knowing the right people may help you get a job and a jod helps meeting people.
Does the family count?
I didn't have Sociology which is for the best knowing my Uni's approach to Politology and History of Economics.

Not to the same degree as it was, but yes it does. And your family is a very big part of it.

Getting to know the right people in the right circle is how you get ahead, getting to know those people you can't just be friendly or have a good education, you have to either through your education or your family (friends) get to know those people.

An example from the top of my head: The three most influential court cases in the last 100ish years in Norway was judged by judges from the same family. That doesn't just happen if it wasn't for the social capital that family carries.

You can see the same examples in politicians (Bush Senior and Junior, Norway have Stoltenberg and Stoltenberg), people running businesses, leaders in hospitals, lawyers and so on. Who gets a Higher Education (even here in Norway where everyone gets a scholarship to go study) and who goes to trade school.

I'm not going to say I am an expert on this, and we mostly talked about how this works in Norway, where we as a society look at ourself as without different social classes. Which frankly is bullshit.

I see it in my own life, studying Film and Television I am one of the very few people in my class who don't know anyone in the business. I am in an even bigger minority when it comes to which social class I belong to. So when I go out to work, I will have to work harder and accept lower positions than my classmates because I don't have the same social capital as they do, or even the economical one.

Yes, not having social classes sounds like bullshit.

I guess you'll have some friends in the industry - your classmates, though it's not the same as having family friends in the business.

In Russia the education is free if your marks are good. To achieve this you'll need a nice school, ambition and, ideally, some tutoring.
Networking is the way to go here, same as everywhere else. I haven't dealt with it personally but I heard that it's jungle out there from others. In some companies the best possitions go to friends and family.
