Smart move. You don't want to know what happens when fandom finds out that you're not starving and facing a lifetime of debt.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-07 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Nothing wrong with being financially secure. As long as you're not scum.

I can get that. I, conversely, usually hide the fact I'm poor.

ROFLcakes A+ choice of picture, anon! (Can't remember the interview offhand, but I boggled when MF said he got four million (yes, million) pounds for H2G2.)

(Anonymous) 2015-04-07 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't. It's not like I make it well-known like on my Tumblr or anything like that, but for my closer fandom friends, they know that I make decent bank.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-07 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Does it ever get awkward?
I internet-hang-out with a group of people I met in fandom years ago. We were all struggling students back then and now there's a fairly wide range of incomes in the group. Sometimes I find it weird because so much of our original bonding was due to being less wealthy.

Me too. even on this community I'll never let people know unanon that I live above the poverty line.

DA

...I'm pretty sure the median demographic of FS is somewhere in the low-middle income bracket...am I wrong?

As long as you're not "Friend B" from the "Classcism discussion" thread in page 2 you're golden with me.

ngl, though, some people do get jealous even if you do exactly zero bragging if they find out, so I can't say I blame you for being cautious there

(Anonymous) 2015-04-07 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes and no. I don't purposely hide that I'm well-off, but most people don't ask and assume I'm middle class.

When people do ask, I do purposely hide exactly how well-off I am.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-08 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Not the OP.

I make a decent salary ($80k US) and drive a nice car, etc.

And I am STILL flummoxed at the amount of money some people spend on fandom things (like $2k for a Supernatural meet and greet at a convention. For 30 minutes with a group of ten people! Or ten $200 photo ops on one day.)

Not sure what these people do for a living or if they have wealthy families (or overextended credit cards) financing their fandom activities, but there are definitely people who probably spend more money than you do in fandom and make no effort to hide it.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-08 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
In my experiernce, the people I've seen who do that aren't making more money than you, they're just spending it much more frivolously

I've seen people spend $300 on figurines then beg on the internet for rent

(Anonymous) 2015-04-08 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but it's difficult to tell the difference between people who generally live well and spend lots of money on frivolous things, those who are broke but still spend on frivolous things, and those who (like a lot of people) save up for big events or merch that are meaningful to them by scrounging at other times.

I don't really hide that I make a lot of money, but I also don't hide how much I work to make it.

Most of my fandom friends are college or post-college with a lot of debt, working regular entry-level jobs. On the other hand I have a high-skill position and often work 100+ hours a week, and get paid appropriately. I'm sure they sometimes are jealous that I'm debt free and have a good career path lined up, but then I'm sometimes jealous that they work normal jobs with regular hours and co-workers and working conditions and have the time and opportunity to do fun fannish things like go to cons or spend a few hours a day playing games online.

Huh, I'm glad that you like FS enough to make time for it.

Oh Jesus, a hundred hours a week. You in medical or something? That sounds fucking HELLISH, and the only folks I know who work similar hours are doctors, EMTs, or other such staff.

I might be broke, but I don't envy your work hours at all. I couldn't handle a third of that time. Yike.

Did you choose this pic because John's watch is so expensive, OP? I remember reading about Sherlock's wardrobe where the watch's and the coat's price tags jumped out.

It makes sense if everybody else are not well off. Now I wonder how rich the OP's talking here. I won't judge in any case. I've read somewhere that the social capital counts too, like how many friends you have, if your profession is prestigious (nevermind if low paying), a family you have. It was some UK website...

Same.

And it's all because of Mommy and Daddy too.

Although I will say that they worked their way up from basically NOTHING and made ENORMOUS sacrifices.

I basically didn't see my dad at all for the first ten years of my life.

But now I've got almost half a million dollars to my name. And I'm not even 25 yet. But I have so much horrible anxiety about being poor from reading about it that I basically don't spend it -- it just sits and accrues interest.

Even at my job -- I make about $24,000 a year right now and I save over $11,000 of that every year.

I don't. Hide it, that is. I've helped my fandom friends a lot over the years when they need it, because I can, and what else is money for? I work hard for it, I should be able to spread it around if I want. I love fandom charity auctions especially.

Text: I hide the fact that I’m well off from my fandom friends.

Seems like a good idea OP. It's courteous not to bring these things up if you can help it. It's irrelevant most of the time anyway in terms of having fun in fandom.

How well off are we talking about?

Most of the fandom I know is pretty middle-class. Well, college-educated with student loans...

My parents paid mine off, but I can't find a job, so I don't know what I am...
