Why do they have to be the same age?

Probably because most of the other male characters on the show are played by actors who are in their fifties. The guy pictured is in his early twenties. OP might find the age difference squicky, might not be attracted to any of the older men on the show, or might just think that having another hot twenty-something on the show would encourage slash fans to pick up the show and start producing fanworks.

Because his back story makes an older partner unsavory. He was abandoned by his drug addict mom, he became a sex worker who mostly serviced older men. So an age appropriate pairing makes those that love him happy.
