"Curious foreign things"... I like that.

I'm American, and patriotic in a "when wrong, to be made right" kinda way, but I'm also well aware that my beloved country is kind of batshit nuts. It makes me feel better when I feel like other nationalities view Americans as more wears-pants-backwards-on-Fridays-to-confuse-evil-spirits crazy than pile-of-dead-hobos-in-the-basement crazy.

You know, I think we are actually more of the wears-pants than pile-of-dead-hobos when compared with other nationalities. For example, we've all seen those pics of Russians climbing on top of sky scrapers, national monuments and even the Sphinx without so much as a safety harness just to take a picture. That's dead-hobo crazy. An American would love to do something like that but instead would create a jetpack to fly up there (with a back-up parachute) and probably dress up as James Bond or Superman to do it. Like you, I think we are more eccentric crazy than stupid crazy.

No, I think the difference is between superstitious/quirky (confuse evil spirits) versus irrationally malevolent (dead hobos).

By that measure...eh, the USA has a pretty high proportion of weirdly malevolent.
