I wonder if people who think stuff like "even the less serious ones are brainwashing us wholesome, guileless non-Americans into cultural degeneracy" realize how incredibly insulting they are being to their own countrymen and -women by assuming that they're all too stupid and gullible to manage to keep a sense of self/cultural identity just because of a few dumb tv shows that no one is MADE to watch by anyone.

It sounds very much like something some religious people I've met have said. I had the very same reaction. They're not giving much credit to their fellow believers if they think America can corrupt anyone so thoroughly just by a few silly tv shows that they have to be kept away from it entirely.

Yep, I've heard this argument a few times where I come from. "The West is ruining us all by forcing us to watch their sinful content!".

On one hand, it's true that culture and morality are different things to different regions and there ARE a few shows that do cross the line. On the other, media is a very diverse place and the bad stuff can also be separated from the good stuff if you know how.

But then again, people see what they want to see. I guess as long as that rule still stands, there will be people who will exclaim "They're are influencing us!" without realizing how hollow and insensitive it all sounds.

Sinful was exactly the word I've heard as well. It's most hilarious when these religious leaders try to ban things that are actually pretty innocuous, although they've a fondness for American stuff.

Coca Cola is sinful! Swimming pools are sinful! Pet dogs are sinful! My favorite of all time was from a Christian: Line dancing is sinful! Apparently it causes uncontrollably lustful thoughts and sensual gyrations. (Not any line dancing I've ever come across.)

Oh yeah! And then there's the reasons, which in my region always boils down to three things: Jews, Israel, and Palestine. "Coca Cola is supported by Nestle who is supporting the Jewish agenda and oppressing the Palestinians!! We must ban them!!"

My university lecturer even shared us her story of how she and her sisters would buy MacDonalds and eat quickly because their parents keep saying "MacDonalds supports the Israeli regime!". She now supports gay rights despite being Muslim (what's that? there are no gays here? You really don't look hard, do you?).

The most eyeball-rolling of this is when these people make up a list of "bannable" items, which often range from cooking oil to milk powder. All I can think off whenever I read them is between "Doesn't God want us to be forgiving?" and "Oooh! I must buy that!"

Actually, it sounds very much like something some of the anti-Twilight/FSOG people would say.

it's called cultural imperialism.
