Inspired by #6

What character/pairing/fandom/trope were you surprised became popular?

Feanorians (except maybe Maedhros and Maglor): I was so irritated with them after reading the book, I was surprised so many people seemed to find them interesting.

Turin/Beleg: Turin is such an asshole, I'm surprised so many people apparently like him.

Cirdan/Gil-galad: I'm not sure if this is popular any more but it was back when I was a teen.

Yay, Silm characters.

I guess for me most of the Feanorians I find interesting even though I think they are horrible people. Feanor especially. Maedhros and Celebrimbor are really interesting to me, though, and while the former is still a horrible person (and the latter isn't at all), I think they are both two of the most interesting Tolkien characters.

I agree that Turin is an asshole. Don't like him. I do find his story interesting, though, and I don't necessarily have to like both characters to ship something.

Yeah, I get all that.

But, I don't find them interesting. I find them reprehensible, full stop. And that's not appealing in the slightest to me. So, it was jarring when I first got into fandom to find so many people handwaving their terribleness.

Oh, the handwaving of character awfulness happens in every fandom and bugs me every time. I'm perfectly fine with liking characters who do horrible things and liking them for who they are. Interesting does not necessarily equal good.

Although, I'd still argue with you about Celebrimbor. He's not terrible. The only bad things he did were down to being tricked by Sauron, and canon is pretty clear that he never went dark or intentionally did evil.

The fact that he's making the rings at all is terrible. He's trying to subvert nature. It's the reason the Valar do not do more than send emissaries to deal with Sauron. Plus, it added to the strain among all the remaining free peoples.

I know you have a thing for him but he's unlikeable.

If he were objectively unlikeable, so many people wouldn't like him. I think thing should go "I know you don't have a thing for him but no everyone views the character through the same lens".

He's... okay to me.

I think I like the Fëanorians because they aren't idealized, perfect characters (which is terribly common for Tolkien Elves). I admit, I am biased because I RP characters with strong connections to them, but even then, I still favour Maedhros and Maglor (who, along with Celebrimbor, are the only ones still alive).

I really do agree however on Túrin though, he fails to be likable for me even on the "Not Idealised" pass.

I remember being surprised at how popular Snarry was when I first discovered it as a teen. I think I was surprised at how mega-popular Snape was, really. Oh, the Quizilla romance quizzes starring him... :P

And Draco/Hermione too.

Draco/any of the main Gryffindor characters. He was a racist, bulling jerk. Why would they be with someone who tormented them and made racist remarks against either them or their friends?

Bagginshield. I was seriously expecting Bilbo/Smaug to be the juggernaut ship, because of all the crazy Sherlock fans.

Re: Inspired by #6

I think there's more Smaug/Bilbo -art/fic because of Sherlock-fans, but I never thought it would be bigger than Bagginshield, since Smaug only arrived in the second movie. And he's a dragon. That's bound to turn some people off.

Bilbo/Bofur was something I did not except. At one point it almost rivaled Bagginshield, at least in the kink meme.

Tony Stark in the MCU. Especially compared to the other heroes.

I'm not at all surprised MCU Tony is popular. The character is really different from his pre-MCU comics counterpart. I might've been skeptical before the first IM movie but after seeing RDJ in the role for like, 10 minutes, I knew he was going to be huge.

Gandalf/Galadriel has become surprisingly popular based off of one scene, though admittedly her canon romance got even less focus in the movies.

Sirius/Remus. I excepted people to ship everything, but I was genuinely surprised at just how popular this pairing was given how even book 3 talked about the Marauders' friendship and how much closer Sirius was to James.

The popularity of Thranduil/Bard has also surprised me.
