Teacher/Student Relationships (In Fiction)
(Anonymous) 2015-04-10 12:05 am (UTC)(link)I think (hope) most of us will agree that these kind of relationships are creepy and unethical in RL (especially if they involve a minor), but how do you feel about them in fiction? Do they always squick you out or do you have exceptions? Why?
Would it ALWAYS be skeevy or would you be okay with it when the younger one's older and on a more equal level with their ex-teacher? Does it matter how long the teacher taught the student?
I ask because there does seem to be differing opinions on this; a couple like Ezra and Aria from Pretty Little Liars is (understandably) regarded as creepy, while a couple like Rose and Dimitri from the Vampire Academy series is widely accepted and shipped. Why? (Also, most fans of the Immortals quartet by Tamora Pierce seem to be okay with Daine/Numair, but I'm not expecting many people to be familiar with that one.)

(Anonymous) 2015-04-10 12:09 am (UTC)(link)In fiction, few things squick me out.
There might be dynamics within the specific relationship portrayed in a piece of fiction that would cause it to squick me out, though. Also things portrayed in mainstream media may squick me out more than they would in fic, because they have capacity to make people think something is perfectly okay. In fandom, we understand what fic is about.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-10 12:18 am (UTC)(link)So, a lot of the time, I feel the appeal of these fics stems from that time when the student daydreams about being noticed by the hot teacher, and not some old teacher perving on kids that are too young to consent.
I do have limits. I would be much more comfortable with college-aged students and high school age. Definitely not for really young kids.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-10 12:29 am (UTC)(link)Side-note: I notice this most with Harry Potter fics. I'm a big Snarry shipper, but can't read any of my old favourites anymore because they where set during Harry's school years. Nowadays I only read post-Hogwarts Snarry, in which I wasn't interested when I got into fandom at all.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-10 01:17 am (UTC)(link)Re: Teacher/Student Relationships (In Fiction)
Do you mean if the student is older than the teacher? Because I could see that, with some grad students. Either way, if they're both adults, and the teacher is no longer the student's teacher and the student no longer attends whatever institution the teacher taught at, it seems ethically okay.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-10 05:53 am (UTC)(link)An adult who looks at the children they've been assigned to mentor and sees possibilities for sex is creepy, and any intimate relationship they'd have with one of those children would inappropriate, unprofessional, and creepy.
I understand kinks. I'm not talking about fiction here, where both parties are part of a fantasy and no one is actually being hurt. I'm talking about reality, and I hope that the users on here would be able to look past any personal kinks they might have and see that a child in this situation is being abused.
Re: Teacher/Student Relationships (In Fiction)
(Anonymous) 2015-04-10 10:14 am (UTC)(link)Also, didn't Daine/Numair take a fair amount of time to develop? Or am I remembering it wrong?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-10 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)In military setting, the 'teacher' might be an instructor, in a sport team could be your coach.
