Teacher/Student Relationships (In Fiction)

(Anonymous) 2015-04-10 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Kind of inspired by the age gap thread yesterday.

I think (hope) most of us will agree that these kind of relationships are creepy and unethical in RL (especially if they involve a minor), but how do you feel about them in fiction? Do they always squick you out or do you have exceptions? Why?
Would it ALWAYS be skeevy or would you be okay with it when the younger one's older and on a more equal level with their ex-teacher? Does it matter how long the teacher taught the student?

I ask because there does seem to be differing opinions on this; a couple like Ezra and Aria from Pretty Little Liars is (understandably) regarded as creepy, while a couple like Rose and Dimitri from the Vampire Academy series is widely accepted and shipped. Why? (Also, most fans of the Immortals quartet by Tamora Pierce seem to be okay with Daine/Numair, but I'm not expecting many people to be familiar with that one.)

In fiction they don't squick me out at all (if student is over 16).
In fiction, few things squick me out.

There might be dynamics within the specific relationship portrayed in a piece of fiction that would cause it to squick me out, though. Also things portrayed in mainstream media may squick me out more than they would in fic, because they have capacity to make people think something is perfectly okay. In fandom, we understand what fic is about.

This is my kink so I'm okay with it as long as the student is 16 or older.

I think the thing with teacher/student is that I don't think it's uncommon for students to have crushes on their teachers (whoa did I ever for my calculus teacher in high school; it helped that he was in his early 20s).

So, a lot of the time, I feel the appeal of these fics stems from that time when the student daydreams about being noticed by the hot teacher, and not some old teacher perving on kids that are too young to consent.

I do have limits. I would be much more comfortable with college-aged students and high school age. Definitely not for really young kids.

There's a reason I adore Kakashi/Sakura and Snape/Hermione...

I quite like it in fiction so long as the student is 16 or over.

I noticed that the older I get, the squickier I find teacher/student relationships. Before I was legal myself student/teacher relationships where my jam, nowadays I don't even want to read student/college professor. Student/mentor relationships where it's not an official position of authority (high school teacher/pupil vs. entry-level new employee/person charges with showing them the ropes) I'm still mostly all right, but I wouldn't read proper student/teacher anymore.

Side-note: I notice this most with Harry Potter fics. I'm a big Snarry shipper, but can't read any of my old favourites anymore because they where set during Harry's school years. Nowadays I only read post-Hogwarts Snarry, in which I wasn't interested when I got into fandom at all.

In fiction, it's sort of my kink along with older man/younger woman relationships in general, though I'm not comfortable with the girl being younger than 16. I'm also okay with dub con, which most people might find skeevy.

Do you mean if the student is older than the teacher? Because I could see that, with some grad students. Either way, if they're both adults, and the teacher is no longer the student's teacher and the student no longer attends whatever institution the teacher taught at, it seems ethically okay.

But did you even read the thread yesterday? Most didn't agree they were creepy or unethical as long as they were past a certain age limit and the younger partner wasn't younger than the older partner's children.

By "creepy and unethical", I was referring to the inherent power imbalance that comes with an intimate relationship between a teacher and a student, not the age gap. It would still be be creepy and unethical (imo?) if a high school teacher was in their early twenties and dating one of their students.

Unethical, sure. Creepy? Eh. I still don't know if many f!sers would agree since that's a pretty popular kink.

A high school teacher having sex with one of their underage students would unarguably be statutory rape. Minors can't consent to sex with an adult, and the teacher would be abusing the trust of the people (parents and school staff) who put them in that place of power over the child.
An adult who looks at the children they've been assigned to mentor and sees possibilities for sex is creepy, and any intimate relationship they'd have with one of those children would inappropriate, unprofessional, and creepy.

I understand kinks. I'm not talking about fiction here, where both parties are part of a fantasy and no one is actually being hurt. I'm talking about reality, and I hope that the users on here would be able to look past any personal kinks they might have and see that a child in this situation is being abused.

Yeah, rl it would be/is skevvy as fuck. But in fiction? Hnnng, it's def. a kink for me, but that's in part because age gap is a kink for me so...-shrugs-.

Also, didn't Daine/Numair take a fair amount of time to develop? Or am I remembering it wrong?

Re: Teacher/Student Relationships (In Fiction)

(Anonymous) 2015-04-10 12:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Daine/Numair took about three years to develop. They met when she was thirteen and got together when she was sixteen, if I'm recalling the exact ages right.

If it's between two adults such as in Top Gun it's fine for me and makes up a great trope for fanfiction plot bunnies
In military setting, the 'teacher' might be an instructor, in a sport team could be your coach.
