Re: What's your least favorite kind of wank?

Because it's not an exclusively white nation, and non-Hispanic whites are expected to become a minority in a few decades. And depending on location, having an all-white cast is going to be unrealistic. I live in a city with an African-American majority, at least within city limits.

But we can walk and chew gum. We can also support more diverse casting and minority directors and creators.

No it's not exclusively white. But Hollywood is in the business of making money so it's gonna pander to the majority.

And, more to the point, if the writers are white, white is what they are most familiar with.

So instead of saying that people should have white writers awkwardly insert POC characters (usually in side roles), why not PROMOTE POC writers and their characters along with media from majority-POC nations?

And this I can and do agree with and was probably trying to say. I don't do well here.

I can walk and chew gum, apparently you can't.

Yeah you can do BOTH but it's just...I see so much more focus on having Hollywood's white writers include POC and it's just so...blah...to me. Why are you so concerned about a side character being POC when there's SO MUCH wonderful media produced by POC that you could be promoting?

It just seems like people are implicitly saying that everything white people make is "better" and thus more "worthwhile."

As though Korean dramas and Latin telenovelas don't "count" on the same level as white-produced media does...

It really rubs me the wrong way.

Yes, we can do both. We do both. That's because we need to do both.

The way it's handled though makes it seem as though Hollywood making one shitty white-written POC led movie counts for more than all the work of POC writers and all the media of POC-majority nations.

Believe it or not, some of us have been playing the long game on the diversity issue.

Honestly, if you're playing the long game, I feel like you'd be better off just waiting until POC are the majority in America. It seems like white writers still only have POC in shoddily written side roles for the most part.

Either way, it annoys me that POC writers are passed over so often while people focus on white writers giving POC a cameo. Yay.

KDramas and telenovelas are pretty niche, dude... It's like telling people who want more lesbians in their media that they should just go watch The L Word.

"As though Korean dramas and Latin telenovelas don't "count" on the same level as white-produced media does"

That's pretty much what most people think even non-white people from countries that produce telenovelas.

Hell, most people even think any American remake is great and won't even give a chance to the original (see: Betty la fea and Juana la virgen if you want some obvious examples)

In the end, a big budget and the "Hollywood" brand-name is considered a guarantee of quality, while a local small production is the opposite.

So I've been reading your comments all over this thread, and I just have to ask... do you think that POC creators only want to produce POC-driven narratives or something? Or that they would even want to? Is the expectation that more POC writers will "fix" the representation problem because naturally they will want to write "POC stories" instead of, I don't know, the generic action/horror/romance plots that white people write?

And what if they don't?

We can rebuild the industry from within, sure, but that IS a long game. We should not focus any LESS on trying to get present day Hollywood to cast more POC, because those are the movies being made right now and we can't forget we need to be supporting POC actors as well. And since actors are the face of the industry, more POC actors getting work will make the industry look visibly less racist, which goes a long way to normalize for the public the idea that, yes, Hollywood movies can and should be ethnically diverse.

As for foreign media, uh, have you not considered that any time a language barrier comes into play, a whole host of issues will stand in the way of making something mainstream? I'm an Asian person living in Asia. I can consume my country's media as well anything English-language... for everything else I need subtitles. Yeah, I can see which one is the tougher sell.

Pander to the majority? That must be why there are SOOOOO many movies staring women right?

JFC, POC are human beings! We're not that damn hard to write.

People ARE promoting POC creators! You keep insisting that it's an either/or scenario when you can support POC creators AND hope for more POC characters in white Hollywood (especially if you're an American consumer that wants to see American actors of color get good roles too).
