Glasses. On TV, movies and even in some books, glasses are a death sentence. It's to the point where when I was a kid, I honestly believed only smart kids wore them. No, I knew popular kids with glasses. Granted, they mostly wore contacts, but it wasn't like you put on glasses and turned into Steve Urkel.

I have glasses now, but felt this way before, honest!

What I don't like about glasses in tv/movies is how they are indiscriminately used to signal "doing smart stuff now" (like reading or using a computer) with characters who do not otherwise wear glasses. Needing reading glasses is usually something that happens in middle age and is fairly rare in young people, and yet all kinds of media like to show teenagers and young adults pulling out glasses only to do "smart" things like read when it's highly unlikely they'd need them. If they need glasses at all, they'd be far more likely to be nearsighted and need glasses for things like driving, watching tv, or seeing the board in class.

An optometrist I used to see said being in school affects your vision and that was why my perscription kept changing up until I finished grad school but hasn't changed in the ten years since. I didn't develop a need for reading glasses, though, I became nearsighted and needed glasses for practically everything BUT reading. Before I started wearing contacts, I used to take my glasses OFF to read. Doing "smart" stuff may make you need glasses, but not reading glasses.

Holy crap, I thought I was the only one who takes glasses OFF to read.
