How to get taxi drivers to stop talking to you

(Anonymous) 2015-04-10 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
I get that some really just want a conversation because of the nature of their job, and I'm ok with that, but I've had some who ask personal questions that aren't outright invasive, but still uncomfortable. I don't ride a lot of taxis, but when I do take taxis alone I worry about this somewhat.

A friend told me to avoid this she likes to glue herself to her phone, put in earphones, or (pretend to) sleep. I don't think the first 2 are effective enough, and I'd never do the 3rd if I'm alone.

Yeah. I find that really uncomfortable too. One guy asked me where I worked, who I lived with, what I was doing later etc.
I try to just be polite and vague. "I work in an office - it's pretty boring / I live with other people / I'm seeing friends later." Or turn the conversation back on them if possible.

I know I have a right to tell people I don't want to give them any personal information, but if I'm alone with someone I don't know, I'd rather avoid any kind of confrontation.

I wouldn't pretend to sleep or be so distracted that I wasn't paying attention to what area I was in and what direction I was travelling. I think that's potentially dangerous. If I had to, I might say that I have to reply to a work email and apologise for interrupting the conversation, or if I'm feeling unsafe I might say I'm just letting a friend know I'm getting a cab and I'm nearly there.

There's not much you can do beyond the phone thing, giving very brief answers can help as it tends to not make the conversation go on for too long.

Just be polite but make sure your tone indicates you aren't interested in chatting. I wouldn't worry too much though, the most I've ever had a cab driver do is give me his number at the end of a cab drive where he was flirting, but it really wasn't anything where I felt unsafe and I was more confused by the occurrence then anything because it's really not something that happens all the time.

A lot of drivers are perfectly fine with not chatting and just listening to the radio while they take you to your destination.

Nothing wrong with saying "I'm sorry, I'm just not feeling chatty right now. I got a lot on my mind. Do you mind?" Most cabbies will respond "Fair enough, I won't bug you."
