iPods, iPhones: y/n?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-12 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it worth it to buy an iPod touch? My iPod Touch, that has almost passed its seven year birthday finally broke. I have no other Apple products, and a cheap Android smartphone. iTunes is the only Apple program I actively use. I looked into buying a new iPod touch and they are like $200+. At that price, should I just convert to an iPhone? I like Android but am not necessarily bothered either way, it just seems like a waste to shell out so much money when presumably a little more could get me a better product.

Are iPods a dying thing now anyway? When I first got mine I didn't have a smartphone and the wi-fi capabilities were also really useful, but that's kind of pointless now. But I've always thought that putting music on a smartphone would make the battery drain really quickly..

I think most people just use their smartphones these days.

I still use an Touch; I don't even know which one it is, just that I like the previous (wider) ieteration way better. Actually, I got that and this Air in the same year and both annoy me to no end.

Apple integrated the phone and the storage capability really nicely into the iphone, so at least the interface won't be a pain to navigate. It's harder on non Apple phones - it also depends on storage.

I prefer android phones because I don't have to deal with itunes and such. I can just plug my phone into any computer to add/remove stuff.

I'm a bit of an anomaly because I have an ipod nano from 2010 and only recently got a smartphone. I've found that the ipod will keep for about 23-25 hours of music, so I only need to charge it every couple of days, but if I listen to music on my smartphone and use it for normal purposes, the battery drains much, much faster on the smartphone.

I think it all depends on how much you listen to music. I sit at work and listen to the ipod all day long every day at work. Look at space capacities if that's a concern too. Certain android phones allow the addition of a card so you can have much more space than the initial phone.

I have an iPhone and a iPod (the so called classic generation but not THE classic of original). I have so much music I didn't dare to put any on the iPhone. So I keep the iPod and still listen to it, at work with my headphones or a long car ride.

Nope, not when a smart phone works just as well and has more utility. Also, with regards to the Apple v Android, you can actually get a decent android for much cheaper than an Iphone - and, generally, I've found Android to be a more pleasant platform [ymmv depending on tastes].

As far as battery, it shouldn't drain the battery that fast unless your streaming music or something. Even then, the newer phones have batteries that hold up much better to that kind of thing.

Yeah, I stream podcasts and music all day at work. Have never completely drained the battery. And most of the battery drain comes from having my screen up while switching between playlists.

This. The main battery drainer on a phone is the display, not the system.

I read somewhere that mp3 players are starting to be considered obsolete with the prevalence of smartphones. Backed up by the fact that there's no iTouch 6 nor any plans for one.

I have an iTouch 5 and I still love it, but the home button is broken beyond repair and iTunes's newest release is unusable for me. So I'd say no, don't get a new iPod. Get an iPhone if you're dedicated to Apple, but don't expect iTunes to help you very often.

The only reason I don't use my phone for music is because I don't have the memory space for it (need to buy an SD card and those are pricey.)

Personally I still stick with the Ipod classic. I like actually having all my music on my player, and the touch (and the iphone) does not have enough storage space for me. I have the 120 gig Ipod classic.

Haha, my music collection would never fit on any existing portable player of any type, even a dedicated mp3 player with a huge solid state storage medium.

I've nearly maxed mine out so I'm going to reach that point soon. But at least I want to be able to keep most of it. I never know what I want to listen to. I almost always play it on shuffle.

This is the only reason I own an iPod. I loathe Apple products, but there literally wasn't any other MP3 player out there that had enough storage space to hold all of my music.

I had a Touch and downgraded to the classic for the same reason. My 32 gig Touch was almost full and I considered buying the 64 gig version, but then I realized my phone really makes the app part of the Touch unnecessary and I'd rather have the larger storage space of the classic (plus it was cheaper and will probably last me longer than the Touch would have).

OP

So looking a little further at prices, it seems that the advertised $200/mo plan for the cheapest iPhones is very deceptive because it ties you into a contract where you keep paying more for the phone, and end up paying like $700+. The contract-free ones are quite a bit more expensive. Well I'm actually in the UK so I'm translating a bit, but the cheapest, 8GB iPhone5 no-contract is 360 pounds... so that's like what, $600?

Quite a big difference from a $200 iPod Touch!

Still, I wonder if both just aren't overpriced because it's Apple. Maybe the best option for me is to stop using iTunes and find a new program that's compatible with an Android. Since I've bought so much music on iTunes I don't know how easy it is to transfer but... I hear Androids tend to be much cheaper than iPhones and you can get just as good of a product.

Android uses Google Play music. And this is what I have found.

"Google Play helps you bring your iTunes library to your Android devices. You can upload up to 50,000 of your songs from your computer to Google Play for free. Once you’ve uploaded your music, it's instantly available on the web and your Android phone or tablet. No wires, downloading or syncing. "

DA

It can, but you can also use another music player [that usually comes with it as well] that's generally better/less likely to cause issues if you bring in music that isn't in either the google play library or itunes.

If you're in the US, I think they still sell the older-gen iPhones at Radio Shack (probably at places like Wal-mart, too). If you buy the phone upfront, pay-as-you-go phone plans are $40-50 a month.
