Re: Game recs?

Can someone recommend to me a dark medieval fantasy game without a lot of pointless grind, bullshit DnD mechanics, or talking to people? Like Dark Souls is a good example of the setting I want, but I want something that's easier both by dint of not being Dark Souls and by not having a bunch of fiddly old-school bullshit fake difficulty. Bonus points if it's strictly a one-character kind of game as opposed to having to gather your party before venturing forth.

First thing that came to mind was Zelda but I'm 99% sure that's not what you're looking for.

Probably not, no. ;) Love 'em anyway. The N64 games are the closest that series gets to being "dark fantasy" however.

I have no rec, but I just wanted to say I love the new icon.

Thank you! It was a pain to get it down to <40kb.

Such laid back requirements! :P

Sorry though, I don't know any off the top of my head.

Yeah, that's the problem with the fantasy genre, most of it's gonna be grindy RPGs with a ton of dice rolls and other DnD bullshit. I'm hoping someone might know of something that doesn't have that.

If you don't mind my asking, why are you interested in playing fantasy - since it seems like you *really* don't like the normal conventions of the genre?

I like fantasy that strays away from those normal conventions, and that includes fantasy games that aren't the same generic RPGs over and over again.

Fantasy's pretty diverse as a genre innit? It's like sci-fi, there's something for everybody.

Ah, I wasn't saying that it wasn't, or suggesting that there was anything wrong with looking for something that wasn't generic high fantasy. [Actually, if you know any other than Dark Souls, mind if I ask for a rec?]

It's just that fantasy *games* tend to be a bit less diverse if you want something that isn't high fantasy.

Yeah, and that's the problem innit? ;)

The newest Thief; dark medieval fantasy world setting with no grind and a focus on just one character and his story.

I'm a huge Thief fan already, though I haven't played the new one.

Well, Overlord is anything but D&D. Digging around also brings up the Deception series, which is definitely dark enough.
