Game recs?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-12 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
If you're looking for a type of game but don't know what to get, ask away here!

I am looking for city builder games that don't include warfare but do include disasters like power outages, food shortages, stuff like that. I have Banished but it's merciless. I don't care for Simcity, although I liked the facebook Simcity game pretty well (except for all the bullshit facebook makes you do).

The new one everyone's talking about is Cities: Skylines. As a fan of that kind of game myself I haven't had a chance to try it, but it's worth a shot from all the press it got.

Banished is a challenging game, but there are a lot of mods for Banished that make it easier. "Banished Plus/Banished+" has a lot of small improvements that add up. "Specialized Stockpiles" help keep storage better managed. Both "Unlimited Quarries and Mines" and "No Coal in Houses" are self-explanatory. "Debug Menu" is, of course, cheaty, but nice to save from a disaster.

Other games? It does seem like Cities: Skylines is worth it, but I haven't gotten it yet.

Needing a sidescrolling platform game that isn't too worried about graphics and story, but can be played to fill in the occasional half hour.

There's a lot of 'em. Platform/difficulty/price?

Can someone recommend to me a dark medieval fantasy game without a lot of pointless grind, bullshit DnD mechanics, or talking to people? Like Dark Souls is a good example of the setting I want, but I want something that's easier both by dint of not being Dark Souls and by not having a bunch of fiddly old-school bullshit fake difficulty. Bonus points if it's strictly a one-character kind of game as opposed to having to gather your party before venturing forth.

First thing that came to mind was Zelda but I'm 99% sure that's not what you're looking for.

Such laid back requirements! :P

Sorry though, I don't know any off the top of my head.

The newest Thief; dark medieval fantasy world setting with no grind and a focus on just one character and his story.

Well, Overlord is anything but D&D. Digging around also brings up the Deception series, which is definitely dark enough.

A fun fantasy RPG for 3DS. Preferably with likable characters, and preferably something I can slash. :P

Bravely Default is quite fun but there's a lot of grind. The art style is really cute and I really liked the characters.

Fire Emblem: Awakening. So much slash, especially if you femslash as well.

Any Mount and Blade type games out there that are any good? It's a big plus if they're moddable.

Strat-RPGs for either PC or DS.

* I've played the Final Fantasy Tactics games available on the DS, The Reconstruction series on the PC, the most recent Valkyrie Profile, and Rondo of Swords.

* I also tried the Luminous Arc series--good gameplay, but the stories are kind of obnoxious.

* I'm currently playing Devil Survivor, which is kind of a strat-RPG if you squint. (I'm stuck right now on Beldr. Who on Earth thought it was a good idea to make a boss who can only be damaged by one attack, usable by one character, with no way to increase the damage output, and then give him the ability to heal himself whenever he wanted?)

* Disgaea has some funny Let's Plays, but all the stuff I've heard about level grinding kind of scares me away from playing them.

* Knights in the Nightmare confused the living hell out of me.

* And I'm enviously gazing at the strat-RPGs for PSP, which I don't own. (Jeanne D'Arc, how you taunt me.)

Well, if you mean party based strategy I can think of a few options you haven't mentioned like the Shadowrun games from Hairbrained or Wasteland 2 and/or Xcom.

You don't NEED to grind until you go mad in Disgaea. I did more than I normally would, but you can get through the story just fine without doing more than a handful of outside-the-story grinding.

So I have two types of games that I would like right now:

1.) Any kind of really good vintage-looking pixel horror game. Gabriel Knight is a good oldie, but then a really good new pixel horror game is The Last Door. Anybody have anything along those lines?

2.) Wilderness/survival/horror. Miasmata and The Forest are good examples of what I'm looking for. Preferably they have awesome scenery porn :D

The Last Door <3 I loved that game's atmosphere.

Well, there's the Deep Sleep Trilogy and Lone Survivor. Both are on Kongregate like The Last Door (though it's only a demo for Lone Survivor...)

The Cat Lady is also a /really/ good horror game. By far one of my favorite games.

the white chamber was also pretty good, iirc. And is also free.

The Long Dark isn't really a horror game, but it is a wilderness survival one (with surprise Jennifer Hale!).

I love monster-collector games and a lot of the ones I manage to find are... kind of bad. Have already played the Pokemon games and would love to find something just as fun and creative.

Something sim or zoo tycoon like with dinosaurs?

Or proper breeding simulators?

But not interested in stuff like flight rising. Too damn slow. I want an actual game
