[Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory]

I generally think 70s movies, as a whole, are pretty terrible. Willy Wonka has a lot of style, though.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-13 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel the same way, they just look so dull and lifeless. I'm not even a fan of Willy Wonka tbh.

Star Wars, The Godfather, Jaws, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Grease, and the Rocky Horror Picture Show would like to have a word with you.

I like 70s films better than 80s films generally but both those decades are my least favorites going all the way back to the 20s. I don't know what it is.

I do like Willy Wonka though, and a bunch of others from those decades.

I normally dislike movies made in the 70s, but... Gene Wilder. That is all.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-13 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like I would have Tumblred the shit out of him if Tumblr and I existed in the 70s. And written some kind of fic about him, but I'm not sure what kind because there is literally no one to ship him with in that movie.

And do NOT say the Oompa-Loompas because you KNOW that shit ain't happening.

And don't even go with Grandpa Joe because he is a fucking asshole. It's not YOUR golden ticket, you deranged FUCK. Charlie bought that fair and square. Go back to bed, you lazy ass shit.

70's movies are amazing and I love their dusty, messy feel.

It was a good period for naturalistic colour cinematography. I think it was partly a reaction against the oversaturation of early colour film, and partly an advance in the available technology.

This.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-13 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't understand this secret at all. If you liked the movie because of its feel, why would knowing it was made in the 70s suddenly make you like it more, just because you like movies made in the 70s? I'm trying to think of an analogy...like, I like a certain lip gloss, but can't quite place the flavor. Then I find out it's vanilla and I like it even more because I like vanilla. It's very circular logic.

OP

(Anonymous) 2015-04-14 06:36 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I already liked it because I'd read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory when I was younger, and when I heard there was a movie, I watched that too.

But when I was younger I didn't really notice the fashion changes from the 1970s to the 1980s, and I'd watched it in the mid-80s so as I said, I had always assumed it was an '80s movie.

Thus, cue me being rather pleasantly surprised when I saw it had come out in 1971.

Many of the movies I like tend to be from an era circa 1978/79 to 1985 or so. Early 70s cinema is definitely "dusty" (that's a good word for it) and kinda bleak to look at, but there are some good movies from that period. Even if the special effects kinda suck most of the time.

Image: screen cap from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, of Charlie staring into the window of the candy store

Text: for the longest time I thought this had been an ‘80s movie. Then I rewatched it in 2000 and I kept noticing the hairstyles didn’t look right. I checked the box and found, to my surprise, that this came out in the 1970s.

That makes me like it more, actually, since TV shows from the 1970s are dusty and brownish and gritty as hell, but they feel more real for some reason.
