I generally think 70s movies, as a whole, are pretty terrible. Willy Wonka has a lot of style, though.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-13 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel the same way, they just look so dull and lifeless. I'm not even a fan of Willy Wonka tbh.

70s movies are great, Actually

(Anonymous) 2015-04-13 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Star Wars is great. Not so much other 70s films.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-14 02:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Either you're trolling, you're unfamiliar with The Godfather, Taxi Driver, Rocky, Apocalypse Now, Alien, The Muppet Movie, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Stripes, Animal House, Chinatown, Monty Python And The Holy Grail, Network, Blazing Saddles, Superman, Young Frankenstein, AND Enter The Dragon, or you just have no fucking taste.

You young people these days terrify me.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-13 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
How about it? The last golden age of Hollywood.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-13 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Not actually that young, and I studied film, so I saw a lot of 70s films. The Conversation made me want to repeatedly slam my head into the wall because I hated it so much.

Overly talky films with too many pauses between actions just aren't very appealing.

Short Attention Span Theater

(Anonymous) 2015-04-13 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes I can see where plot driven films are boring compared to the Michael Bay school of directing.

This is anecdotal evidence, but my mother (who was born in 1950) hates everything about the '70s, especially the movies of that era. From what I've seen, people who experienced the '70s seem to agree that time period was dismal in almost every way.

I dunno - most of my childhood happened in the seventies and it was pretty grand. Snoopy and 'Hang Ten' shirts and Cher and the Bee Gees and roller skating and that hair-do of Farah Fawcett's...and Farah herself, wowza, and Bo Derek and the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew and...well....
*shrug*

I don't hate it, that's for sure. Now the eighties - *there* were some dismal times.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-14 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I was around in the 70s and I'll take them over the stupid fucking 80s any day.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-14 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope. Born 1961 here, and the 70s were fine. Except punk rock, that was crap.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-14 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I had my teen years in the 70s and they were great.
Plus some of the best films were made then.
Maybe your mum was just not happy in herself for that decade or something.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-14 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I was born in the 1970's, and I liked them. There was a lot of cultural flow from the West Indies into the USA and UK, and a fair amount of denim and natural hair, which I like. And the film-photography aesthetic of the time was really something--not just in cinema but in graphic arts.

And there were still old WWI doughboys around, and they could be pretty cool. None of this stupid lionizing of the WWII vets as the "Greatest Generation"--that would've been deflated fast.

Admittedly also there were polyester and double-knit, which were pretty dire. And there was a sort of..."plastic" style & subculture that continued through the 1970's (though it started earlier and lasted longer) and was always a bit silly.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-13 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
That is one of the dumbest things I have heard in long time. Do you think before you type or are you just an idiot?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-13 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
A bit harsh. They're probably either young, haven't watched many movies, and/or don't realize how many of pop culture classics were made in the 70s. People tend to voice opinions even when they don't have a lot of experience to draw from and they don't realize their ass is showing.

Excuse you.

Star Wars, The Godfather, Jaws, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Grease, and the Rocky Horror Picture Show would like to have a word with you.

and the only films in that list that don't have that ugly gritty look are star wars and the godfather

(Anonymous) 2015-04-14 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
No, The Godfather has that gritty look, too.

Uh, no? Jaws is bright and pretty and happy, most of the time. Jaws is one of my all-time favorite movies and it's not 'gritty' looking at all (unless you're watching some super-crappy VHS-dubbed-to-CD copy or something).

I like 70s films better than 80s films generally but both those decades are my least favorites going all the way back to the 20s. I don't know what it is.

I do like Willy Wonka though, and a bunch of others from those decades.
