Re: petty rant thread

I'm trying to lose 15 pounds for the sake of my health. This is not anorexia. My BMI is 24. Losing 15 would put me at a nice even 20, right in the middle of healthy range instead of leaning toward overweight.

Everyone is being completely unsupportive. When I was 30 pounds up, they were all for it, but now that I've worked most of weight off, it's "you look fine", "no one needs to be that skinny", "omg you might weigh less than me".

I don't want to think they're jealous, but yeah, I'm thinking they're jealous.

Family or friends?

If it's family (parents) it could be genuine parental 'concern'? My parents are always telling me I'm too skinny when I'm probably average.

Both.

Hard to think it's genuine concern when they weigh similar things to me but have been complaining about wanting to lose 10 pounds for years. Then when I 'threaten' to do it for real, it's omg no!

Ah. Fair enough then. :/ That sucks.

"I think we've done this discussion to death, I'd rather we didn't bring it up anymore."?

Unless they're likely to bounce back with, "Oh but we're just conceeeeerned."

And then just give them a Look™ every time they say something weight related.

I just think that people shouldn't judge other people's life choices when it comes to weight. If they want to diet, let them. If they don't, then don't try to force them.

Fuck the phrase "going on a diet." Everyone applies it to every instance of changing eating habits which makes it all worse. I'm trying to permanently change my eating habits to be healthier and losing unhealthy weight in the process, not doing some temp thing to look better.

This is the petty rants thread, yes? I hate that phrase.

Lemme hijack your rant, pls

Everyone applies it to every instance of changing eating habits which makes it all worse.

A friend of mine is rail-thin to the point of being mistaken for anorexic by well-meaning but misguided strangers. Part is her metabolism, part is her getting sick really easily, part are her many and varied food allergies and intolerances. When she doesn't feel nauseated after a meal it's an exception.

She recently switched to soy based products and almond milk which don't give her any problems. Turns out that cow milk and milk based products were a huge contributer to the nausea, and since the switch she's actually gained weight. But whenever someone overhears us talking about her changing to soy and almond milk they assume she's talking about ~going on a diet~ and wanting to lose weight (even a startling number of people who ought to know how much she wants to gain weight).

NO. This isn't about losing weight but being able to eat without feeling sick. Amazingly it turns out that if it doesn't make you feel like throwing up, you eat a lot more than you used to. Now shut up about you misguided ideas and stop saying how she looks "great just the way she is", especially if you know she's hates being so thin! (She has to shop in the children's section because women's clothing is cut for breasts, hips, and ass she simply does not have. She's closer to thirty than twenty but still gets mistaken for sixteen or younger.)

Reactions like that are a very well documented side effect of weight loss. They're probably not even that conscious of it, it's just that your success and changed lifestyle makes them feel guilty and bad for the fact that they're not doing what you're doing.

That said, keep in mind that BMI is kind of bullshit.

Nah.

For the vast majority of people it works fine. And if it doesn't you'll know anyway.

Doesn't mean that being perfect BMI makes you fit or healthy, but falling above it as a rule certainly hampers you from a health perspective.

I'm not suggesting this is how everyone reacts, only that it's not an uncommon reaction.

What's your suggestion.

That BMI doesn't measure excess bodyweight?

Or that excess bodyweight isn't linked to worse health outcomes?

I honestly think a lot of western countries have a distorted view of what the average weight should be.

Like we're looking at forty percent obesity rates in some places.

You get surronded by that and your idea of healthy weight gets skewed.

Pretty sad. Save us from ourselves modern east asian countries.

Opinions are like assholes, everybody has one.

When I'm not losing weight, people have opinions.

When I'm losing weight, people have opinions.

If you feel like your body is telling you that it's not in optimal health being overweight, listen to your body, not other people.

Make sure you keep a balanced diet, get all nutrients - but for the rest, ignore, do what feels good, repeat.

Congrats on your progress anon! For some reason the last bit is the hardest to get rid of. Good luck!
