A store near my house has a "buy two, the third is free" deal - on ducklings.

It just really rubs me the wrong way. Am I nuts?

I'm not sure what you're objecting to. You don't think sales should apply to livestock?

Nuts not to buy on that offer. Do you know if he is going to be running a deal on piglets anytime soon?

Do you object to livestock in general?

as pets, or as food

Ducks make great garden pets, as long as you give them a water source, and they aren't happy if they are in groups less than three (ideally you want five), so this is smart marketing. The guy is making sure his or her ducklings will be going to happy homes. What type of ducks, btw? Indian runners are the best.

Indian runners are absolutely the best! So cute, and so great for pest control!

This is pretty common practice in livestock sales.

Doesn't mean it shouldn't bother you though.

This is definitely petty and my flatmate doesn't deserve it at all, but:

My flatmate is getting married, thus leaving me effectively homeless when she moves away. I either get a place of my own (which means I'll have literally no disposable income, if I can even pay bills) or move back in with my parents when I'm nearly freaking thirty.

That's not the issue, just background. She's having her hen party two days after my birthday at the opposite end of the country. She's constantly complaining about how broke she is but she makes £2K+ a month. I'm lucky to make £600. Her wedding is even further away and she spent enough to put down a deposit on a house on just the venue. Her (well off) parents and her (also well off) fiance's parents are going to end up paying for most of the wedding because they rushed it rather than saving up for it.

Going to the hen and wedding combined would cost me about £600 (an entire month's wage or more!) and I'm just really bitter that they have parents that can dole huge amounts of money out to them when they make stupid financial decisions.

Nah, I'd be annoyed, too. It's cold comfort, but if your roommate's missing out on learning valuable skills about managing money wisely, and unless she can manage to remain well off for the rest of her life and avoid all financial setbacks, it will come back to bite her on the ass HARD.

AYRT - FML I appended this to a thread about discount ducks.

Her fiance has a min wage part time job and they're planning to move into a new house after the wedding. If they'd just had a small ceremony they would be in a much better position and would actually have savings *grumble grumble bitter grumble*

Uh, maybe ducklings would be a good wedding gift? I hear there is a deal on them.

Noooooooo, roommate sounds like a pain so you don't want her to be delighted when she opens up a box of fluffy ducklings.

Discount Ducks sounds like it ought to be a MARVEL phase three movie with Howard the Duck.
