Then according to your logic, if writing it is so important, then it shouldn't matter if you borrow images as supplementary material? I mean, asking someone sounds easy, sure, but drawing stuff for icons takes lots of time, and not everyone is so generous and/or talented. Not to mention, there aren't many people who'd be willing to take all the trouble to draw SOMEONE ELSE'S RP CHARACTER.

I still don't get what's the big deal? If it's just pictures you're using and you're creating the character, then you've obviously taken the care to find an image that best represents the character - regardless of whether they've drawn it or not, if it fits the character, then it shouldn't be a problem, since, as your said, describing actions is the point, so a little bit of imagery that might not necessarily be originally really shouldn't matter, yes?

Personally, it bothers me most when people take art that doesn't belong to them, pass it off as "this is my character" and then don't credit the person who drew it. Or especially if they don't even ask permission of the artist. Honestly, if I go to the trouble to actually create a character with all aspects, from personality to physical appearance, entirely from my own head, it'd hurt to see someone else steal their appearance. Using celebrities is different to me, because it is sort of designing a 'dream cast' of actors. But stealing a character that someone else put forth the effort to make is different.

What if you credit them?

ALSO! Personally, I find that a lot of manga/anime characters, especially ones for stuff like one-shot doujinshi tend to look similar a lot of the time, and, no offense, to the authors, but not that unique. If you credit them and create a new character just using their appearance - which really is just that of a normal person - then is that still so bad?

I can see your point, yeah, it'd hurt to see someone else steal their appearance, but I think it'd understandable? Especially if a character's appearance was mundane enough that another personality could easily be slapped onto their face to create a new character alkewfnb

I certainly don't mind if you have the artist's permission, and give credit. If it's something fairly mainstream or published, such as actual anime or manga, then it's also fairly well understood that it's not an image of your creation.

I think my only real issue with it is when it is stolen from someone else, especially when the person taking it is trying to pass it off as their own. I've seen people go far enough to remove an artist's watermarks and place their own on an image instead, wanting people to believe it was their own.

(Not talking about fandom RPs) I think it's far more original and interesting if someone comes up with their own character description, rather than seeing something else and taking that. At least making an effort to make a character that is somehow different or unique from the mainstream is nice. However, I can understand it to some extent, especially if you're just trying to give a rough idea of appearance.

I guess my problem is more with art theft than necessarily RPing from a pre-created image.

Yeah! I'm against art theft too alkwejnpf Like, I think people taking images that OBVIOUSLY AREN'T THEIRS and are just using them for supplementary is no problem? Most of them already write descriptions and stuff anyway, but just use the pictures for icons and stuff? Since it's more fun that way?

BUT YEAH art theft shouldn't be forgiven, I agree to that one alkwjefn

Even taking images for icons bugs me if it's done without permission, from someone else's original characters.

But if you're using icons of a character from a series or a game (or something else widely recognizable) just to supplement the RP, then yeah, I think that's fine, and I get why people do it.

Maybe it's just sort of a difference of opinion as far as using someone else's characters goes.
