No. It's how we get papers related to legal grey areas - it's not really clever to do a study on organised crime but then turn around and go "hey, btw, I'm not really one of you guys, I was just studying your behaviour in detail to find out more about how you work within society. Oh, and I've written it all down :D :D :D"

Usually in these cases no names are named, as it's not the academic's goal/job to do that. And then we start straying into the whole moral grey ground of 'surely they should report things that are illegal' etc etc which I'm not gonna go into because it doesn't really relate to f!s too much.

There have been papers on fandom before. Usually the author talks about patterns as a whole but also picks out a few random people to interview. In these cases the people are usually either not named or given an alias (within the writing of the paper.)

There's a whole moral grey area surrounding the study of humans without their consent, but it's usually done as the study of a group rather than an individual, no names are used, and it's highly unlikely that you'll ever find out about the paper you 'contributed' to. In fact, it's unlikely this is the first time you've ever been used in some sort of study (probably as a statistic), whether you consented or not.
