If they've got a tumblr with an anon, tell them that. It'll creep them out, but it's better that they realize they're close to their employers finding them out.

You could always frame it as an accident. "I was just clicking around and I saw this" or "your google plus account is connected to your email"

Though if you really don't want them to know it's you, sign out before sending it via tumblr. Some people have add ons to catch people with fake anon buttons.

Keep in mind people have figured out ways to fetch the originating IP from "anon" asks as well.

Fairly sure that isn't possible anymore. That's why it's a myth that it's possible to find out who sends you anon messages. It used to be possible a long time ago iirc, but it hasn't worked for years.

If they have a stat counter on their tumblr and someone goes through to the ask link on their page (as opposed to doing it from their dash) they can definitely identify the IP (unless they are getting tons of messages at a time).

That still doesn't help identify an individual. My IP address puts me at a location several hundred miles away from my actual address.

And unless the message itself was threatening or harmful, no one's ISP is going to look into it for you.

Really, though...people's employers aren't searching for porny fanfic or fandom activity anywhere.

Unless it shows up on the first page or three by searching a person's full name, it's nothing to worry about. If someone had to do detective shit to find it, it's hidden well enough.

Maybe not, but all it takes is one disgruntled hater with IP address tracking (which is painfully simple) and an email or phone call to their boss.

When you're talking about people working in sensitive professions like schools, then you can see the shitstorm it could provoke.

Having compromising material linked to your name is nothing to shrug off. Your employer may not scour fandom for connections to employees. But the chance that they will google your name? Click a few links? Not so rare.

And someone who does know telling? That very well could go bad for you.

People like that can fuck right off. These are the same kind of people who try to ban books.
