And this right here is what ended up stopping me from posting fanfic to anything that isn't a burner account.

And yes, OP, this *is* pretty creepy.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-14 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Pervert.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-14 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, OP, you're creepy by definition. People like you are why I take some pains to avoid linking my different online personae together and keep a very slim RL social media presence.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-14 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, they're not DOING anything with it. Nobody's getting harassed or doxxed by OP. They're a white hat cyberstalker. Is the only non-creepy thing to do pretending that this information doesn't exist?

This is why I don't use FB. I set one up years ago just to reserve the name; minimal info (as much of it false as I could.)

(Anonymous) 2015-04-15 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
Same. I don't have facebook or twitter precisely because I don't trust anyone on the internet. If I need to keep in contact with people IRL then we've already exchanged numbers and e-mail address.

I've checked on my real name before. My parents' real names can be linked to some of their past addresses, but my name can't be linked to anything more specific than towns.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-14 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh, I hate knowing this, but there's more ways to find something out than having their name [plus, there are sites that do collect and post that information online that you probably won't find in goggle searches if you're just looking for your name.]

If they've got a tumblr with an anon, tell them that. It'll creep them out, but it's better that they realize they're close to their employers finding them out.

You could always frame it as an accident. "I was just clicking around and I saw this" or "your google plus account is connected to your email"

Though if you really don't want them to know it's you, sign out before sending it via tumblr. Some people have add ons to catch people with fake anon buttons.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-14 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Keep in mind people have figured out ways to fetch the originating IP from "anon" asks as well.

Really, though...people's employers aren't searching for porny fanfic or fandom activity anywhere.

Unless it shows up on the first page or three by searching a person's full name, it's nothing to worry about. If someone had to do detective shit to find it, it's hidden well enough.

I have questions for you OP. Many many questions.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-14 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
1. Who taught you this?

2. Why do you do this?

3. Are you spreadsheet!anon?

Not OP

If their job is running background checks they may know it from there - that's how I learned to do it.

Idk about why they would though - seems pretty creepy to me.

1) Teachers, among others. Without being too specific, it's useful in the job description.

2) Force of habit? Because I can, I guess.

3) No way, nowhere near that organized.

It scares me sometimes how much information people post about themselves that could track back to identifying them.

Some of the people in my fandom post from their work IP addresses, post their colleges and use their real names on fandom emails. I'm hardly going to do anything with it but if it's that easy for me to track their home addresses down out of boredom, then what about someone who wants to doxx them or has a grudge and hates their fics and wants to tell their bosses they're writing porn on company time?

Obligatory 'in my day' comment, but in my day we were extremely paranoid about posting anything that could even remotely connect back to our RL identities. Pseuds and sock emails were the default. Today it seems so much more casual and lax.

Or maybe some people don't actually care that much? I mean, all my friends & family know I write fanfic. I just don't fly my fic in their face because it's personal. I don't even let them read my original fic. It makes me feel too exposed.

One more comment . . .

[personal profile] feotakahari 2015-04-14 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I informed a porn writer once that mousing over the downloadable fics he'd provided revealed the name he'd typed in when he'd registered his word processing program. I recommended changing programs and reuploading, but the fics were years old and he hadn't been contacted before, so he didn't seem too concerned.

Text: I’m good at finding people. In fact I’ve been specifically taught how to do it.

Sometimes I look up people in fandom. Some do a good job of keeping their online persona separate, but in some cases I’ve found pictures and real names. And if I have a name, I can get an address.
I’ve considered telling them, saying something like: “Hey, do you know your dubcon can be linked to your facebook?” But I never did, because I feel that would make it infinitely more creepy.

*googles self*

*breathes a major sigh of relief*

According to google I'm the most boring person in existence (but do in fact exist) and a stripper in the US Canada.

Also many dumb preteen surveys from when I was young and dumb. *shakes head at self*

This is a good secret as it serves as a reminder to people to protect their identity. It's important to separate fandom activities and real life.
