Or maybe some people don't actually care that much? I mean, all my friends & family know I write fanfic. I just don't fly my fic in their face because it's personal. I don't even let them read my original fic. It makes me feel too exposed.

My family all read my blog, fanfic and all. *shrugs* Maybe I'm doing anonymity wrong?

There are a lot of people who don't care. In my fandom I've seen several fanfic writers and artist share their fic/art with their IRL friends or write/draw smutty stuff for each other. Or they talk about how their parents or significant other buy them fandom related stuff.

I've been lucky to have very open minded employers and teachers who have talked about fandom stuff themselves, or even joke around about fanart and the like.

Not everyone is as lucky or comfortable with that of course, but I would hope they have a good alter ego to protect themselves from the kind of people that would use it against them. It's horrible when you can't even feel safe in fandom.
