(Anonymous) 2015-04-15 01:58 am (UTC)(link)I'm also closer to 40, and it's not the insecurity of it or the "omg what if someone I know IRL finds out I write porn!"
It's more "do I keep my job if my boss finds out?" It's more "do I really want ammunition available to the random internet crazies that decide one day that they hate you and need to try ruining your life just because your fic gets more comments than theirs?"
There have been some anonymous haters I've had over the past few years who I would most definitely not appreciate knowing a thing about me IRL. They were persistent and threatening enough when all I was to them was a pseud writing fic.
When keeping fandom life and RL separate is so simple, I just don't see the point in risking potential RL consequences for me, my job, my family, etc. by putting more out there than necessary.

In my case, I work in IT with a bunch of fellow geeks, I'm already estranged from the more judgmental parts of my family, and the church I attend is liberal, speaks out for LGBT rights, and is sex-positive. Basically anyone that one of my own old haters (and I have had some personal stalker trolls in the past) might run and tattle to? Either wouldn't care, or is already not someone whose opinion I give a crap about. I'm fortunate in that regard.
