It scares me sometimes how much information people post about themselves that could track back to identifying them.

Some of the people in my fandom post from their work IP addresses, post their colleges and use their real names on fandom emails. I'm hardly going to do anything with it but if it's that easy for me to track their home addresses down out of boredom, then what about someone who wants to doxx them or has a grudge and hates their fics and wants to tell their bosses they're writing porn on company time?

Obligatory 'in my day' comment, but in my day we were extremely paranoid about posting anything that could even remotely connect back to our RL identities. Pseuds and sock emails were the default. Today it seems so much more casual and lax.

Oh lord, there are fanfics I've written that if anyone IRL knew I'd written them I'd basically have to cut off all contact with that person out of sheer embarrassment.

So much this. I have never had a social media account, and I will never have a social media account. EVER.

Oh man, I have such thorough pseuds/sock puppets. Male and female. Different ages, different locations. Several social media accounts per.

IA so much.

I still cling to the old days, so I keep separate accounts (and use different browsers!) for fandom stuff and RL stuff, but I keep seeing people who use their facebook account (with their real name, not a sock one) for fandom despite having their family added there too.

Funny thing is, I'm on the older side of fandom (closer to 40 now than 30) and at this point in my life I feel like if someone finds out I write porny fanfic and has a problem with it? Not really worth it. Of course I have a job where no one would care, and other people aren't that fortunate. But overall it's like, take me as I am. If you don't like it, too bad.

I suppose "back in the day" when I was younger and more insecure, I would have been concerned about people connecting the dots too. Apparently I grew out of it. (Not to say that people who are concerned about such things are immature, because some people have DARNED GOOD REASONS to be concerned, just noting that my own position seems to have changed greatly over the years.)

AYRT

I'm also closer to 40, and it's not the insecurity of it or the "omg what if someone I know IRL finds out I write porn!"

It's more "do I keep my job if my boss finds out?" It's more "do I really want ammunition available to the random internet crazies that decide one day that they hate you and need to try ruining your life just because your fic gets more comments than theirs?"

There have been some anonymous haters I've had over the past few years who I would most definitely not appreciate knowing a thing about me IRL. They were persistent and threatening enough when all I was to them was a pseud writing fic.

When keeping fandom life and RL separate is so simple, I just don't see the point in risking potential RL consequences for me, my job, my family, etc. by putting more out there than necessary.

Yeah, like I said, I recognize some people do have perfectly reasonable reasons for reeeeally not wanting anyone to connect the dots. I make it a point not to tag certain friends in cosplay pics on FB, for instance.

In my case, I work in IT with a bunch of fellow geeks, I'm already estranged from the more judgmental parts of my family, and the church I attend is liberal, speaks out for LGBT rights, and is sex-positive. Basically anyone that one of my own old haters (and I have had some personal stalker trolls in the past) might run and tattle to? Either wouldn't care, or is already not someone whose opinion I give a crap about. I'm fortunate in that regard.

I think everyone has their own thing they do in their free time they want to keep a secret. If one person is writing smutty fanfic, then there is someone else who watches a specific fetish porn, and another person who still likes playing with barbie dolls.

We can have our guilty pleasures and just agree not to bring this stuff into the work place. I know some people might not be in such forgiving conditions, but I just think everyone should be allowed their hobbies in peace as long as it isn't hurting anyone.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-15 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it bothers me too. Especially because a lot of fic writers in my fandom are pretty young like 16-23 and they don't think about people who might get a grudge against them. Some get anon hate for their fics, even those who's fics are pure vanilla and nothing offensive. They wouldn't even have to do much to offend anyone besides maybe shipping someones nOTP.

It sucks because people should be free to write what they want, especially fanfiction. It's just a fun way to relax or provides stress relief, and it's terrible that there are some people out there who would want to ruin their lives because of it.

I've been pissed at people but I just try to block them from my life and ignore them. I'd think you'd have to be a sociopath to feel no guilt at sabotaging someones life over something as harmless as fanfiction. Also what if you get the wrong person? I know there are several people that share the same first and last names in the same general area.
