Stubborn malware

(Anonymous) 2015-04-15 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
I'm having a problem. Every so often, when I click (not necessarily on a link), a new tab appears to a site called "stamplive.com". I've looked it up and apparently it's a well-known and sorta nasty piece of work, but I've tried the advice I've found for getting rid of it and nothing's worked. I downloaded a malware remover from CNET (which my father, a computer scientist, says is his go-to site for reliably good programs) that had a 4.5 star rating from both editors and users. I tried using my regular antivirus which is normally very reliable in my experience. Neither fixed it.

I even looked through the registry and other appropriate folders for the files some websites say to remove manually, but they don't appear, so I'm not sure if they're not there and the problem is somehow different from the common issue despite looking like it's the same, or I'm just terrible at finding things, or something else is up. I've tried pretty much everything I can find, and it's still happening. It happened just now when I clicked the text box to add more to this post before submitting it.

Does anyone have any experience/advice for this particular problem (that a computer-illiterate person like me will be able to follow without getting totally lost)?

First and foremost, I'd recommend also running your anti-virus since something else might have come in with the malware.

Also, try going to your control panel - uninstall/change and see if anything you recognize from those sites is there, or any extra little tool bars, etc.

Also, I'd recommend seeing you can have your father look it over if possible.

I checked the control panel and the only new programs since February are the aforementioned malware detector (installed yesterday) and a program that lets me save Audacity files as MP3 (installed a month ago, which I think is before the problem started, but I have a terrible sense of time and am not 100% sure). I'll try deleting the latter just in case. I'll go ahead and run another full system scan with my antivirus and if all else fails, yeah, I'll talk to my father the next time I see him. That won't be for at least a couple of weeks though.

Which malware program was that? I've used Malwarebytes to get rid of some persistent malware. Sometimes CCleaner will show you and let you uninstall programs that aren't in your control panel. I've also had to use a small program called AdwCleaner to fix my boyfriend's laptop browser troubles. Resetting browser settings is always recommended.

I don't know what the program is actually called, so I just googled the website that pops up. I've run both CCleaner and Malwarebytes in the last 24 hours, and I just finished my system scan with my AV. All of them claimed to have found and resolved a few issues, but apparently none of them were the stamplive thing. *shrug* I'll check out AdwCleaner too though, thanks for the suggestion.

If there are no newly installed programs to delete, you could also check your browser add-ons and extensions, sometimes a lot of malware that hijacks internet pages will find its way there. It might also be reinstalling itself that way every time you delete the other components from your computer.

Do you know the exact date it first popped up? If so, you can search for files on your whole computer using a date modified filter. It could be in any folder, even legitimate ones. Once you find a file (or more than one), you'll want to delete them, but you'll also want to search for their names in your registry (cast a wide net here - if the name of the file is something like xfrd.dll, look for 'xfrd' and look for all of the names of the files you find that don't belong). Make sure you search the whole registry. Make sure you delete only the malware registry values because you can really mess up your computer otherwise. Oh, and some legitimate files can have really strange names, so double check.
