To be fair, it really bothers me it's not socially acceptable.

Sniffing people? I don't really do it on purpose, but if someone hugs me I notice how they smell.
People have no problem sniffing me. My hair smells nice, apparently.
When my friend was pregnant, she was always sticking her nose on my skin and inhaling because she found it calming. I think it's just something we've learned to suppress.

We actually don't suppress it. If you want to put it scientifically, we call the exchange information and familial or sexual compatibility through scent/pheromones the "major histocompatibility complex (MHC) interaction". Mothers and infants often share these exchanges, as do siblings, potential lovers, friends, and even rivals. MHC interactions in humans are thought to underlie incest aversion, territoriality, mate choice and even friend choice.

Hell, there are even entire genres of porn dedicated to the scent of a man or woman's armpits, so there are even social examples that this particular part of our biology still plays a role in our sexual behaviour.

Ooh. That's interesting.

As far as social behaviour goes though, we don't greet new people by sticking our faces in their armpits. Or have I been doing it wrong?

It somehow doesn't surprise me that there's porn of that.

We don't, but then we really don't need to. We try to mask it in various ways (deodorant, perfume, body wash) but you've probably had the experience of being near someone who hasn't attempted to cover up their body odour. You might be sitting a few feet away from someone on the bus and suddenly be hit by a wall of smell, for example.

It's pretty damn strong, and as it turns out, the compounds that you don't consciously "smell" have an even greater range than the body odour that is caused by our personal armpit biome. Some studies have suggested that under the right circumstances it can have an area of effect of 5-8 feet, which might explain the instances of walking into a room and immediately being drawn to a certain person.

I'm very smell-oriented myself, so yeah, it sort of bothers me it's mostly ignored in modern society.

i was waiting for a subway once and some creepy guy came up to me and asked me if he could smell me. He seemed shocked when I told him to get lost.

Well, I don't really do that with strangers.
