In general, not talking about TF in particular, it's probably because they're still characters with relatable traits and even human characteristics. Even the physical ones serve this; faces go a long way in helping you identify with something/someone, and even a giant laser pointer can resemble one. And if you can be endeared or get strong feelings about a character, crushing and fappage is not that far off a thing.

Tbf, I've loved robot stories and characters since I was a kid. Aside from Beast Wars, which is pretty far removed from Transformers actually, I wasn't into TF until late last year when a few secrets and posters suggested I watch Prime since it's pretty entry level (I think it was riddian in particular), and that kind of gatewayed and snowballed into this moronic personal mission from god to consume every continuity I can get my hands on. Before that I kinda boggled about the appeal of the boxier designs from the cartoon show and why it even had such a massive fandom, but fuck if I don't get it now.

So. Transformers in particular. This is kind of a whole different beast compared to typical robots that are all about the AI, and the themes of self awareness and what defines personhood. Yeah, not even a question here. They're basically mechanical aliens whose level of basically human varies with continuity (these are characters with obstacles to overcome). You got your xeno kink and smorgasboard of character archetypes that look good together and hello shipping (and hell yes when they have chemistry and rivalries and friendships) an inevitable porn. And porn that isn't necessarily reliant on giving them physical sexual characteristics too. If you don't see it, you don't see it. That's cool. I'm just writing all this because it seemed like you were maybe asking a legit question upthread? Can't really tell you why a robot from anything might look attractive, because, again, you do or you don't see it.

Also, some cool things you can try to enjoy robots even if you don't want to bang them with your squishy parts:
Portal (1 is short and sweet. 2 is longer and introduces a robo foil to the mix)
Atomic Robo (comic written by the 8-bit Theater guy. About a robo made by Nikola Tesla. It is the best.)
Green Lantern: The Series (short-lived cartoon, and has an AI ship and robo who develops a literal personality.)
"Last Stand of the Wreckers" or "More Than Meets The Eye" (IDW Transformer comics written by a fucking nerd who wrote TF fanfiction. The former title is entry level and can be read on its own, and the second reads like a tv sci-fi series and mostly read on its own. Both are character-driven and the writer takes massive liberties for your benefit).
My Life as a Teenage Robot (cutest neatest cartoon series ever to ever)

OP says OK i get it now I think.

Yes, I was asking legitimately, but I've realize after reading this that the answer should have been self-evident to me: most of us (?) love characters for their personality characterizations even more than their look. So as you say it's not such a leap from liking and enjoying a character to loving and crushing and even arousal.
cloud_riven: Close-up of an open-mouthed piglet! Is it recoiling? Or side-eyeing? Maybe saying, "HEY YOU TWO SHOULD KISS"? Mystery! (eeeeeeehhhhhh)
