(Anonymous) 2015-04-14 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)I don't get roboshipping at all, and it makes me feel bad, because several of the loveliest posters here are into it.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-15 12:05 am (UTC)(link)The closest I can come to understanding is if the robot has a great voice; I've definitely been attracted to animated characters based on their voice work, os if that's a big part of it I guess I can understand a little.
I should admit that I've never watched any of the robot shows or movies (they just don't interest me).
Re: OP
(Anonymous) 2015-04-15 12:21 am (UTC)(link)Okay. I'm coming at this from a Transformers fandom point of view, just so you know. Obviously this reflects my own biases and those of the people around me, as well.
That particular character, it's probably not his voice that makes original!OP attracted to him, for the simple reason that he gets literally one line of dialogue in the whole series. For some of them, though, the voice definitely helps. (A particularly unpleasant voice can also do the inverse, same as with humans - there's some episodes of a different Transformers series I can't even stand to watch because one of the characters is voiced by a particularly inhuman-sounding text-to-speech machine and it's too grating to listen to.)
For a lot of them, it's the personality - if you (general you) happen to be into people with gruff exteriors and lots of internal turmoil, there's some of them, or if you like people who are just irrepressibly cheerful no matter what's going on around them, or really pretty much any personality type. Fictional robots are just as diverse as fictional humans. A lot of people find them humanoid enough to basically ignore that they're robots. Well-written characters will almost always feel human.
Finally, some people just have a fetish for something about robots. I'm one of them, sort of - I have a thing for airplanes. Obviously I am not going to find a real boyfriend who is an airplane.
Re: OP
Okay, that and he's the biggest badass in the show and I love that he's never lost once despite - because - he looks and acts unassumingly :D
Re: OP
Robot porn where it's just robodicks is completely boring to me, because if I wanted that, I could just look at human porn. But I'm always fascinated to learn about nonhuman characters and how that impacts how they experience the world and the people around them.
Also, you know. It might be less dick-oriented, which is something that annoys me in ANY kind of porn.

Re: OP
(Anonymous) 2015-04-15 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)The spark-sex idea in TF fandom does interest me in that regard, though it can trip into the bad end of soulbond tropes as well. I usually steer clear of humanesque 'spike & valve' stuff because it just doesn't interest me (and because I can't remember a good one off-hand). The manually-stimulated electrical overload (ie orgasm) idea can also be interesting - it's usually the most machine-seeming (spark-sex is often more spiritual, while spike-&-valve is biological-at-one-remove).
... I wonder if anyone ever did any meta on fandom ideas of robot sex in the Transformer fandom. I think I'd be interested in reading that.
Re: OP
Rogan: I admit, I enjoy robot stories of any flavor because I can empathize more easily with them. Like members of a multiple system, they were created artificially, usually for a specific purpose, and are often considered subhuman (or at least NOT human) in the societies around them. So sometimes the more "fantastic" parts of those stories actually ring more true to my experience, even if I can't turn myself into a car.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-15 12:08 am (UTC)(link)It was a nicely made secret, and somehow it was the tipping point to make a secret "asking" why. I'm glad you're feeling oddly flattered rather than hurt or angry.
Re: OP :)
(Anonymous) 2015-04-15 12:29 am (UTC)(link)It'll take a lot more than this to make me angry. Honestly, I think the people of F!S are sometimes too quick to jump on a secret-maker for having a harmless opinion that could potentially upset someone. The things we post here are secrets for a reason, y'know?

The most experience I have with Transformers is with the cartoon when I was a kid (And the first Bay movie, which was pretty amusing tbh; I could almost get what people see in them just for the voices. Don't think I'd want to read smut, but voices are a major turn on for some people and I've certainly been attracted to characters other people might find odd looking so no judgement here).
I would be lying if I said I had never been attracted to an AI character before though. (Michael Ealy in Almost Human, KOS-MOS in Xenosaga... There are surely others.)

Oh <:( Great. I didn't even mean that and now I feel bad.

(Although technically the only "robot" I've ever really crushed hard on is actually a mute, experimental cyborg-assassin-murder machine -powered by a human brain and organs from the black market- and may or may not have self awareness, but eh... it's the ponytail and manlet legs that do it for me, haha. *points to icon*)

(Anonymous) 2015-04-15 02:21 am (UTC)(link)Background Text: I sometimes feel guilty for calling myself a lesbian. Although I’m only attracted to women IRL, half of my fictional crushes are male robots.
Like this dude here. UNF to infinity.
Secret Text: To each their own and all that, YKINMK, but
I don’t get this at all.

Tbf, I've loved robot stories and characters since I was a kid. Aside from Beast Wars, which is pretty far removed from Transformers actually, I wasn't into TF until late last year when a few secrets and posters suggested I watch Prime since it's pretty entry level (I think it was riddian in particular), and that kind of gatewayed and snowballed into this moronic personal mission from god to consume every continuity I can get my hands on. Before that I kinda boggled about the appeal of the boxier designs from the cartoon show and why it even had such a massive fandom, but fuck if I don't get it now.
So. Transformers in particular. This is kind of a whole different beast compared to typical robots that are all about the AI, and the themes of self awareness and what defines personhood. Yeah, not even a question here. They're basically mechanical aliens whose level of basically human varies with continuity (these are characters with obstacles to overcome). You got your xeno kink and smorgasboard of character archetypes that look good together and hello shipping (and hell yes when they have chemistry and rivalries and friendships) an inevitable porn. And porn that isn't necessarily reliant on giving them physical sexual characteristics too. If you don't see it, you don't see it. That's cool. I'm just writing all this because it seemed like you were maybe asking a legit question upthread? Can't really tell you why a robot from anything might look attractive, because, again, you do or you don't see it.
Also, some cool things you can try to enjoy robots even if you don't want to bang them with your squishy parts:
Portal (1 is short and sweet. 2 is longer and introduces a robo foil to the mix)
Atomic Robo (comic written by the 8-bit Theater guy. About a robo made by Nikola Tesla. It is the best.)
Green Lantern: The Series (short-lived cartoon, and has an AI ship and robo who develops a literal personality.)
"Last Stand of the Wreckers" or "More Than Meets The Eye" (IDW Transformer comics written by a fucking nerd who wrote TF fanfiction. The former title is entry level and can be read on its own, and the second reads like a tv sci-fi series and mostly read on its own. Both are character-driven and the writer takes massive liberties for your benefit).
My Life as a Teenage Robot (cutest neatest cartoon series ever to ever)
OP says OK i get it now I think.
