Oh, so because you don't approve of the original work, it's okay for you to change it just for shits and giggles? What did the author do to you to deserve that? I mean, assuming that writing a book you don't enjoy isn't actually a crime, by your reckoning.

I have a suggestion: since this is no big deal, why not confess to your editors and client what you did? Is it possibly because you know you'd get in trouble, so therefore it kind of IS a big deal in the grand scheme of things?

Is this really such a callous affront to the author? The author, who I bet doesn't even speak the language I'm translating it into and will most likely never know this happened. It will not affect their life at all.

As I said before, it would be a waste of their time. I'm sure it would look bad, but what's the point of telling them now? It's already been published, it's a done deal. It wouldn't do anything except please some anons on the internet who want me to get fired, which I don't think would happen, anyway. I'd probably get a slap on the wrist and a frown, and perhaps they'd be less likely to write me a letter of recommendation or something.
